My students are incredible kids, attending a school that is dedicated to providing the foundation for students to attend and succeed in a competitive 4-year university program. The challenges associated with teaching low-income students in Detroit are immense. Even as early as kindergarten students are years behind their middle-class counterparts in other areas of the country. My students are especially low on math, and need concrete, hands on materials so that they can learn and develop a strong number sense. Given the inequity they face, my students deserve all of the tools possible to help them learn. Our school, like most in Detroit, struggles to provide basic learning tools due to budget.
