I teach at a high-poverty high school. My kiddos (9th graders) are a funny, charming, squirmy, smart and empathic bunch of young people. They will argue and fight and stand up for what they believe in and when you earn their trust, they will give you everything. Last year was my first year of teaching and I was humbled by how much my kiddos taught me and the incredible gains my students made throughout the year--both scholastically and personally. Granted, it is not the easiest place to teach in and being a first year teacher last year was eye-opening when all of a sudden I was dealing with tough issues. But, what made me come back this year (and I suspect will make me come back for many more to come) is the joy and satisfaction I get from working with my kiddos. I want to give them the world and this is a small way to start.
