A few years ago I was looking for ways to get kids excited about reading and trying to increase parent involvement at our school. I was looking through Pinterest and saw the board for a Reading Fair. After researching and reading about this idea, I presented the idea to my administration about trying to have our own Reading Fair. Reading is fun and seeing kids getting excited about reading is amazing! For this project the students have to read a book of their choice and create a display board to present their book to their class, school, and community. These boards are then judged by members of the community and surrounding areas and awarded prizes. This idea started small but has grown over the past few years. In the first year we had around 120 students participate and this last year we had over 300 students participate! The excitement about this idea has grown and spread through our school and it's wonderful to hear students and parents talk about how much they love this project. I was even asked to help get this project started in a neighboring community. To complete this project students must read a book that is at their level and then put the important information about the book on the presentation board. Things that must be included are a summary of the book, brief description of the main characters, and other important information. These books would help me to start a library that the students can check out to help them complete their project.
