Math Geeks Need Playtime, Too!
Funded Feb 8, 2024I was so excited to be fully funded for this project and when the materials arrived it felt like Christmas morning in the classroom. I kept the project a secret and when they walked in and saw all of the materials they were very excited. They helped to unpack the items and it was awesome to see how they instantly started organizing all of the materials.
We got straight to work with using the materials in the classroom. I have been reading "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics Classrooms..." by Peter Lijedahl and I requested these items so that I could put my learning into action. The students love being able to use the vertical whiteboards and magnetic easels in the classroom. After a few years of pandemic-driven Chromebook use the students are loving our new materials: magnetic fraction and percentage bars, magnetic algebra tiles, magnetic and
coordinate grids. As a teacher I love my new book that is filled with cooperative learning lessons for my Algebra I class.
These materials will be put to great use for years to come and I know that my students will benefit from them. Thank you for your donation and for helping me to create a math classroom that is active and fun. :)”

This classroom project was brought to life by Connecticut State Department of Education. My Students Aren't Afraid To Be Geeky!
Funded Feb 10, 2014Thank you all so much for taking the time to use Donors Choose and for your donation to make it possible for my classes to receive Scholastic Math throughout the school year. Your donation to our project is appreciated by all of us for different reasons. Resources in our district can be very scarce and more often as not is shared between the classes. I remember as a kid receiving "Weekly Reader" and how excited I was when we would receive a new issue. I would read it from cover to cover and would share it with my family when I got home from school. To see the students hold their first issue in their hands, especially knowing it was theirs to keep (most math resources are shared year after year with other classes), was very heartwarming to me.
The articles in Scholastic Math are very relevant to the students' lives and offer a variety of topics and math concepts. The students loved the article about DNA of pooches and the timely article on the Winter Olympics. As a teacher I relished in the fact that there were so many math concepts the articles addressed, especially probability, percentages and proportionality. It allowed me to find some fresh ideas and projects to use in the classroom (building towers/structures to explore "vanity height" as an example). The articles allowed for more classroom discussion and insight than exercises in our math book can provide.
An unexpected enhancement was that our subscription also comes with access to the online edition of Scholastic Math which has more resources and extensions of the print articles. Wow! Your donation has allowed for math to really come alive in my classroom and each student will enjoy it at his/her level of skill and interest.
Thank you again for choosing us to donate to; it is invigorating to me as a teacher to know that I have the support and validation of wonderful people like you! It also was a great testimony to the children to show that education matters and that they are directly affected by the thoughts, generosity and concerns of others.”
