One strategy I use to convey understanding of vocabulary across the curriculum is making vocabulary cards with four color pictures - math, reading, and science. Students actually stand at the vocabulary word wall to make meaning of concepts following lessons, and look to it when they complete their writing responses and investigations. This donation will help me continue to support literacy across the curriculum by creating important vocabulary cards that include four-color graphics to support visual learning and introduce definitions of the important words we use as we explore new topics. As an example, my first grade students are enraptured by science and have learned and are internalizing that it is the connection between everything! A graphic that shows how sight is processed between the eye and the brain speaks volumes to a young child. The look on their faces with such an observation is priceless. My graduate work has focused on science vocabulary comprehension in early childhood and its impact on learning and literacy. Four-color photographs are most impactful to their understanding of complex ideas as well as the natural world! All young children's learning is aided with visuals. With an especially high percentage of English Language Learners in my classroom, visual examples are even more important. I have personally invested in a four-color laser printer and it is time to replace toner cartridges which are very expensive! The original cartridges have lasted over a year and are becoming spotty. My project is a request for new cartridges so that the vocabulary cards are clear and crisp for better understanding! Thank you for your consideration.
