Scope Magazine inspires and empowers middle-school ELA students with thrilling multigenre stories and engaging activities that strengthen literacy skills and instill a lifelong love of reading (Scholastic). Stories are transformed into engaging lessons for all learners. The classroom learning environment becomes electrified with discussion about current and past events, both fiction and non-fiction. Each month a new magazine arrives with great anticipation. Included in each issue are stories about current events, human interest, role-playing, and fiction. There are a wealth of activities that incorporate grammar, vocabulary, writing, videos with discussion, a classroom play, and in-depth reading questions. The most important feature of this magazine is the high level of engagement for all learning levels and styles, along with the intense concentration on English-Language Arts and writing standards. Students are challenged to analyze stories, plays, and videos using textual evidence to prove their claims. This one skill is probably the most important skill the students need today. Stating evidence for your thinking is crucial in math, history, science, and a myriad of other subjects.
