Funded Jul 18, 2022As a public school teacher, I have typically spent my career looking to do more with less. Textbooks haven't been updated in either Social Studies or Language Arts in the 10+ years I have been at my schools, so finding engaging materials for my students has always been a priority. Thanks to you and your generous donations, my students now have a wide variety of materials in the classroom to keep them excited about ancient history.
One of the things that my students and I both love about this particular project is that it continues to give and surprise. Each new issue of Scholastic Scope and Scholastic News creates a thrill in the classroom, as my students flip through the magazines excitedly looking for topics they are interested in. Taking an informal poll to see which article interested students most has opened the door to lots of interesting conversations and strengthened relationships.
To demonstrate their newfound knowledge, students have worked on interactive notebooks. Using their new composition books, they have already amassed an incredible tome of ancient history knowledge and resources, full of maps, vocabulary, and doodle notes. In addition, students have greatly appreciated the new class set of headphones. Whether it's to watch BrainPOP videos on their Chromebooks, or to listen to lo-fi while they work on their interactive notebooks, the headphones give students confidence to work independently at their own pace.
The success of this project has left me speechless and I have already seen a dramatic shift in my classroom. Knowing that their community has invested in them through Donors Choose has created a sense of responsibility that I didn't realize was possible with 6th grade students. Their eyes light up when they know they're the first person to flip through a new magazine, they take care to return all materials when they're finished, and they treat each item as if it was their own. I am also seeing incredible growth in their reading comprehension. By focusing on vocabulary acquisition, finding textual evidence, and differentiating between different genres, my students have already grown by leaps and bounds as shown by their NWEA MAP and Interim assessments. While test scores have never been a huge priority to me, I am excited to know that my students will be able to access more and more advanced and challenging texts to broaden their interests and knowledge.
I just recently had a conversation with my students about how the most successful schools in our country are those that are supported by their community. With your donations and investment, Jamestown Middle is, in my eyes, one of the most successful schools you could find. Thank you!”
