  • Snare Drums - Bns Band Keeps the Beat!

    Funded Nov 30, 2022

Thank you so much for the amazing gift of our new percussion instruments! Recently we have been learning to swing the beat of Oye Como Va and play syncopated rhythms along with our trumpet section. Having beautiful new drums that set up easily, store well, and sound terrific makes it so much fun to do the hard work of learning to play these challenging rhythms.

When our students first came into the classroom and saw the beautiful new drums lined up in front of their seats they couldn't believe it! Now there is no wasted time at the beginning of the class - everyone just comes right in, meets their instrument, sets it up and gets to it. We all want to start playing on these instruments as soon as we see them because we know they will make us sound our best. We know that all the parts are there, and we will be able to do our best work without any technical difficulties.

We are moving towards our concerts of the spring, and all of our families will be so happy to see us perform on our shiny new drums and to hear their sturdy uniform sounds, with all the snares working well and every child on their own instrument. What a treat!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. f.

  • Joy and Healing for K-5 Live World Music via Zoom, 2

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Thank you so very much for everything you gave to our students by supporting this project! It has made all the difference in this pandemic year for our children to have live zoom visits with musicians from all over NYC and sometimes even all over the world! We have felt connected to each other, hopeful and joyful, and have learned SO much from these guests.

One highlight of our program was just recently when we learned all about the steel pan from Kareem Thompson. He told us the history of the instrument, explained how it evolved, and played the most entrancing dance music - we couldn't stay still and had a dance party in our zoom squares!

Our children are inspired to explore and make music on a whole new level now. They have seen an incredible diversity of musical expression this year, and met many heartfelt musicians who have spoken eloquently about what music does for them and why they work so hard to continue to create and perform music.”

  • Joy and Healing for K-5 Live World Music via Zoom,1

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

This project has been a buoy for all of us throughout this difficult year - thank you SO much for your support. Most of my students have been fully remote and very isolated this year. Our weekly live concerts with various musicians from different communities have been a beacon each week, providing us all with a time that we can look forward to with enthusiasm, when we will share a joyful experience, meet someone new and exciting (our guest musician), and most importantly, share the transporting experience of listening to live music together.

One special highlight for all of us was our amazing steel pan concert! Some of us, in a different class, have been studying Calypso Music using the Carnegie Hall Musical Explorers curriculum. In that curriculum, Kareem Thompson is featured demonstrating the steel pan. My students were fascinated by this hitherto unknown instrument! I was inspired to have a steel pan artist come to present at one of our weekly live music concerts. Guess who I managed to get ahold of - ? Kareem himself! That was really thrilling!

Because of you, my students have had some extra healing from the trauma of the pandemic, and have had a reason to get together and be reminded of and strengthen our school community in a time of terrible isolation. We have all been reminded of how important music / the arts can be in providing joy and solace.”

  • send Brooklyn schoolchildren to see the Brooklyn Philharmonic Schooltime Concert!

    Funded Dec 7, 2004

Thank you so much for your help! Our students love to go to the orchestra, and they only get the opportunity when someone like you is generous enough to help them get the tickets. They are learning so much about orchestral music, and are thrilled with every chance they get to see 'real' musicians perform. This is a wonderful gift to them all.

    Funded Nov 27, 2004

Thanks so much for your help! My students will be so excited to know that we will be able to go on the Link-up trip and participate in this wonderful program. The opportunity to perform in Carnegie Hall is truly thrilling for these young students. Thanks so much, again, for your generous help.

  • Send Brooklyn 5th Grader to Juilliard

    Funded Nov 24, 2004

Thank you so much for your help! I cannot tell you how much this financial assistance means to the family of this young music student. They cannot afford to pay for these music lessons themselves, and she has a great deal of talent -- it would be very sad if she was unable to pursue this wonderful opportunity.

    Sincerely,

    Sarah ”

  • 2nd and 3rd graders at Carnegie Hall!

    Funded May 20, 2004

Thank you so very much for helping me to get my wonderful 2nd and 3rd graders into the Carnegie hall musical explorers program. It is a wonderful day for them -- they are flabbergast to see how these esoteric lessons about something called 'the string family' could connect them to a real and wonderful world of classical music!

    sincerely,

    Sarah F, music teacher”

How can we engage as many children and families as possible in joyful music learning, given that most of the school is fully remote and our resources are so limited? We will host a school wide live Zoom concert every week! Staying focused on what matters right now - healing, staying connected, racial justice, joy – we are creating a weekly 'Meet the Artist' concert series for children and families. Each Monday at noon I will host a live Zoom concert with a different virtuosic musician. Each program will last 30 minutes. I will record each 'episode' for re-screening by teachers and families who are not able to attend live. We will prioritize local artists from immigrant communities, artists who reflect the communities that we serve, and artists whose music is connected to the children’s studies. In these ways this concerts will connect people, elevate and celebrate immigrant communities throughout NYC, and build meaning and community for our children. This project provides our school community with a way to heal and connect through the power of live music in this time of suffering and isolation. We take the silver lining of remote learning and exploit it to benefit the largest number of children and families. Now, as more and more musicians perform online from their homes, we have the opportunity to enjoy live performance more often and more affordably. Children will gain exposure to many musics they would otherwise never have a chance to experience live, and will have the exciting opportunity to hear directly from the artists, and even ask their own questions!
