I teach 5th grade at a Title One school. This means the majority of our students come from high poverty and require free and reduced meals. Several of my students experience circumstances daily that would break your heart. School is their break from the world-the place where they can forget the hard parts of life and simply be a kid. Many of my students do not want to go home at the end of the day.
