  • Happy and Healthy Learning!

    Funded Sep 23, 2024

I've been a public school educator for 22 years now and enjoy the many opportunities I can provide to my students. Funding has never been easy but these days it feels like an uphill battle. Many of my students are hungry and have appreciated the healthy snacks to keep their energy up. In addition, you have supplied cleaning aids. For the past few years, classrooms were provided with cleaning wipes and hand sanitizers. Those resources are no longer bestowed. My computer lab sees every student weekly and last year pink eye was rampant. Cleaning supplies are essential to keeping situation like this at bay. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Malt

  • Clean, Creative, and Tech-Savvy!

    Funded Feb 10, 2024

It truly takes a village these days to have a functioning school. Our budgets are constantly slashed and we are not given new funding for students that arrive after the end of October.

My school started the year with 299 students and we are now at 350 students. The majority of these new scholars are coming to NYC seeking asylum and their families don't have the means to support their learning with supplies.

Your donation has enabled me to keep all of the students nourished when they arrive to my lab hungry and healthy in an environment plagued by the typical seasonal colds and flues as well as rampant pinkeye this year and the norovirus. The students are well aware that the healthy snacks that they enjoy and the wipes we use to clean after each class (I teach 28 classes a week) came from your generous contributions. We really appreciate your gifts.”

  • Full Steam Ahead!

    Funded Oct 14, 2022

In this day and age, a typical elementary school student is on screens for hours a day. As the tech teacher, I try my best to balance this time out with creative play. Thank you for helping with the resources to accomplish this.

I see my Pre-K through 5th grade classes once or twice a week. I also teach a smaller 2nd grade STEAM club twice a week. I have been able to have my STEAM club successfully use the LEGO Steam tools in order to make meaningful projects that I then use with my larger classes. My second graders in particular have been having a blast using their imagination in groups of three and four. Teamwork makes the dream work!

My students have some familiarity with LEGOS but were very excited to see that they could create narratives using them. They storyboarded and came up with some very interesting productions! They were also very excited to build and work with the STEAM Machines.

I plan on continuing to roll out the LEGO sets with some of my older students to see where their whimsy takes them. We are also working on a project to help sea creatures and may use the LEGOS in stop motion PSAs.”

  • How Does Your (Organic and Heirloom) Garden Grow?

    Funded May 13, 2014

My students, like many children growing up in an urban setting, have little connection to the food that ends up on their plates. They see it in the grocery stores and on the sidewalk stands but rarely make the connection that somewhere, someone has grown it for their consumption. This project was a great way to enable them to get their hands dirty literally and to see the steps in creating something from nothing or in this case a tiny batch of seeds sprinkled into soil.

I am a technology teacher and love what I do. I think it is important that students are able to use computers from an early age. I teach keyboarding, blogging, coding and word processing among other things. I am always trying to bring nature into the lab though and it was great to have the entire back counter full of green.

My gardening club gave up their lunch time to come plant seeds, water the seedlings and finally plant the first garden bed outside. We had discussions of the plant parts and the necessary factors involved. Most were taken by surprise how fragile the baby plants were. With joy and sadness, we coaxed them into the soil of the great outdoors fretting over too much sun, fierce summer storms and neighbors eager to share in our bounty.

Although many of my gardening club students are moving on to middle school next week, I am excited to recruit a new team of green thumbs to keep this project alive. The items you so generously donated will continue to help make this happen. Many, many thanks.”

  • Bringing Our Computer Lab into the 21st Century

    Funded May 14, 2014

My students have had a great time using the materials you so generously donated. As box after box arrived they anticipated what each might contain and were not disappointed! They say that it is almost like a brand new lab because of the improvements and updates to older equipment.

They were particularly excited about the new headphones as the old ones were literally falling apart and sticking to their ears! The ones you helped fund fit the first graders perfectly and have better volume control. The document camera has also been of great use- I can now use printed materials in addition to digital materials to teach. The laser pointer helps me teach from any location in the room- it is convenient to ask my students to get up front and demonstrate techniques that I have taught them while I can watch the class as they interact. All of the cleaning equipment have been used to get our keyboards off "The Germiest Places in School" list. I have been able to print student work now that we have a supply of ink and paper.

Instead of maintaining outdated gear, I can now spend each and every minute focused on my students instead of troubleshooting. My students are amazed that complete strangers would donate to help them learn!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Malt

  • Can You Hear Me Now?

    Funded Dec 7, 2009

Before your generous donation, the computer lab was a cacophony of sound. Students in need of phonics instruction were unable to hear the audio and had to rely solely on visual clues. As an auditory learner myself, I know how hard this can be. When two different grade level classes of students shared the lab at the same time, all of the kids knew to mute the computers because the sounds were so conflicting.

After the gift of sound, the students have remarked on how different the computer lab is. The students have an easier time staying focused and even enjoy using the headphones when completing silent writing assignments. They treat the equipment with the utmost care and have learned the terms: "grant," "generosity" and "headphone jack."

The photos feature my first graders, but please know that the lab is used by hundreds of students from kindergarten through fifth grade all of who are benefiting daily from your kindness. With this dismal economy and the accompanying budget cuts a bleak reality, it is great to be able to depend on the kindness of strangers (and friends- Love you Rach!) I hope this finds you well in 2010, I know my year is off to a great start!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Malt

  • Yoga For Happy Minds, Hearts and Bodies

    Funded Nov 6, 2005

After a long day of grueling and stressful test preparation, the students at my school crave some relaxation. You have made this possible! Please know that you are the catalyst in making a beneficial impact in the lives of 45 future yogis. And that's just this year! Namaste,

    Allis ”
