My students study multiple perspectives on historical events and one particularly controversial event in history is the “Boxer” Rebellion. From the traditional Western perspective, this event is characterized as a ruthless attack on foreigners living in China. However, there are more complicated and compelling reasons behind this revolt. These graphic novels present two opposing views on this event, as well as provide a personal connection to history with vivid character development and colorful illustrations. By examining these novels, my students will learn about the subjectivity of history and gain better insight into the motives of people living in the past.
