  • Headphones & Chargers for Our Learning Activities

    Funded Aug 24, 2022

My students have been using the headphones when using their iPads. Since my students are non-readers they rely on read-to-me books. So having the headphones has been helpful in having students listen and follow along to a book. Every now and then we have to remind them to plug them in again/put them on, so we are working on that. Some of my students like using the headphones because they can make the sound as loud as they want without anyone telling them to lower it.

And the charging cords have been awesome especially for some reason all their iPads seem to die at the same time. So having a way to charge them all at once has been great.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Duwe

  • Seeing Color With a Color Printer!

    Funded Nov 25, 2021

Thank you for helping our class get a color printer. They were very excited to get pictures in COLOR! Black and white pictures/worksheets don't get the same reaction as seeing pictures in color.

We have been working on biographies. Being able to print color worksheets/pictures to have students write about a person has been awesome. My students have been creating flow maps to show the life of the person they are writing about using pictures that are vivid and clear from the printer. It has also been great to have color ink for color coding, if some students need that extra support.

We don't only use the printer for worksheets during class activities. After doing a sorting activity on the SmartBoard we are able to print the activity we did and add them to our Science board or folder and refer back to it as we continue the unit. Seeing steam rise from a cup or fog against a colored background or the blue ocean is better than seeing a black, gray and white pictures. Everything is better in color.

Not only has my class benefited from the color printer but so has another class. Sometimes there is a need for an emergency color print of a worksheet (i.e., it got ripped up during a tantrum, or went a little crazy with the scissors). And of course students from other classes have noticed our class printer when they come into our classroom for lunch and request pictures they want printed. It seems to be a good reward for some kids and elicits communication.

I think if I print anything in black and white now it won't make the same impact”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Duwe

  • Engaging Students in Lessons With Technology

    Funded Dec 11, 2018

My students LOVE the tablets we now have. They request what color (red or blue) tablet they want to use when it is time to use them during reading and writing. We have been learning about non-fiction texts and have been researching non-fiction topics in order to create an All About book or poster. My class had to find facts about their topics (trains, sharks, hippos, polar bears, spiders, dogs and space). Some were able to type into google what they wanted to know about their topic, given guiding questions and others needed support to find videos and pictures about their topic.

Of course they somehow get out of google/looking for facts and start playing a game.

Three of my students are very into using the tablets. One of my students has realized that while she is using the tablet and there is only 40% battery life left she will go to the charging station and plug the tablet in and sit where the charging station while using the tablet to make sure it doesn't die while she is using it.

My students have claimed what color headphones are theirs. They are excited when it is time for writings reading because they know we are going to use the tablets.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Duwe
