My school is in a small rural town in Tennessee that currently enrolls around 390 students in grades PreK-5. Over 50% of the students in my building receive free or reduced lunch. There are currently 66 first grade students, and of those students, few begin the year reading at or above grade level. Many of these students also struggle with basic number sense and operations. I have a mixture of these students in my classroom. With these eager learners comes many different goals and objectives. However, the common goal between all of them is to become a higher level, more fluent reader and better mathematician. My goal and my school's goal, as noted on our website, is to "ensure a solid foundation by providing positive relationships and relevant, rigorous student-centered learning that is evidenced by strong achievement." With the proper manipulatives, this goal can be achieved for all first graders at my school.
