Colorful Storytelling with Magnetic Language
Funded Oct 24, 2019My students have been reading poetry and prose extensively, and I thought it would make for a more productive learning experience to create poetic expressions using the Magnetic Poetry. For many of them, finding the right words can be quite challenging, so providing them with the words but allowing them the creative freedom to use them as they saw fit really motivated them throughout the assignment. What they ended up doing with the words, boards, and markers was remarkable: they created meaningful and original writing.
When I first presented our new materials to my class, they immediately recognized what Magnetic Poetry was, but they had never had the opportunity to see how it worked or imagine what they could create. There was a moment after a brief (assignment/expectation) explanation where the room went silent, and it was not one of confusion, rather one of intense creative work going on. I initially had them collaborate (with a partner) in order to familiarize them with how it worked, but they quickly asked to have another opportunity, this time working independently. I too sat alongside the students and participated in the activity, which for them as well as for me made it all the more enjoyable and productive.
On behalf of my students I want to THANK YOU for your generosity and support. The materials that this project funded really helped my students engage in creative process that is writing. They were able to collaborate and consider how language is not only fluid but essential for storytelling. In supporting their education you are more than helping them this school year - you are opening doors that have their future on the other side. THANK YOU! My goal is to continue to utilize Magnetic Poetry in the classroom in order to engage the students in a (nontraditional) method of expressing themselves so they may be productive but also enjoy the process of writing. We are currently in the process of completing another novel and the students have already asked if we will be using the Magnetic Poetry once again. This, for me, defines success.”

Poetry in Your Own (Magnetic) Words
Funded Oct 31, 2018My students were in the process of completing Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and I thought it would make for a more productive project to conduct a character study/sketch using the Magnetic Poetry. For many of them, finding the right words can be quite challenging, so providing them with the words but allowing them the creative freedom to use them as they saw fit really motivated them throughout the assignment. What they ended up doing with the words, boards, and markers was remarkable: they created meaningful and original writing.
