My student population is very diverse; we have students from all over the world. Over half my class are ESOL students and are considered "impoverished" and "at risk." We are a Title I school, with more than fifty percent of our population receiving a free or reduced lunch. Most come from families who could not afford school supplies. Of course, these labels mean nothing to my little people yet, and they are wonderful, energetic, and eager to learn and explore, just like any other five year old. With the increased expectations in reading and writing, they are starting out already behind, since most of them have not had any preschool or academic exposure. Most adults would get discouraged at the prospect of having to meet such high expectations with so little preparation, but five year olds are wonderful in that they know that they can do anything they set their minds to, with the right inspiration.
