Virtual Volunteers: Have a Hat
Funded Nov 9, 2020My Virtual Volunteers are enjoing their chance to learn a new life long skill that is calming and enjoyable. The chance to get together through our virtual google classroom is a great way to stay in touch and connect with each other. Staff and student volunteers all have been enjoying our weekly get togethers after school to donate our time and make hats for babies.
We have quite a few hats to donate to our local hospital at this time. Students have been thrilled since they first picked up their supplies at the high school security desk in sealed individual bags. The supplies have helped students learn a new skill or continue their craft and the yarn is greatly appreciated. The virtual time donated allows students to give back to their community. As one student said, "I love that the hats we are making will be used by each new tiny baby. I really like giving back to families during this hard time."”

This classroom project was brought to life by Students Rebuild Changemaker Challenge and 2 other donors.Give a Little, Take a Little!
Funded Dec 16, 2019My students are excited to have the opportunity to have a good set of supplies which makes them more excited to knit. They are manifesting the yarn to create hats for those in need. The students are excited to learn more about knitting and crocheting and expand their abilities. As we were unpacking our donations, everyone wanted to get started right away. Those who only knit, wanted to learn how to crochet.
The students were amazed and suprised about the amount of donations we recieved from our generous donors. Soon after gazing at the supplies, the students were determined to organize the supplies nicely. The students now have easy access to the supplies and have a wide variety of yarn and needles to choose from for hats.
Now, the students plan on becoming more experienced, motivated and comfortable with knitting. Our goal is to invite more members into the club. We would love for new students to know the art within knitting and giving back to the community.”

Funded Dec 25, 2018I am a student of Mrs. Levasseur and we are very thankful for your donation. My peers and I are working on new hats to donate and we have gotten a lot of new volunteers in our class. These hats are very special because they are being made by our new peers and we couldn't be more excited. Our reaction to the donations was overwhelming by all the love our little program is getting. Everyone was amazed by all the new yarn and knitting needles we received. We were all excited to give our new volunteers their equipment, they are part of this wonderful family we have. We are blossoming into this wonderful flower that is spreading joy to children around the community. Our next step to our classroom lesson would be to teach our new students to love and relax when they are knitting, so their projects will result in beauty.
We sincerely thank you for your donation,
Croinys
Hi, I am a member of the Have-a-Hat Program here at the high school. I just wanted to send my thanks for the donations that allowed us to get brand new hooks, needles and yarn! All these materials will be put into great use as we work on our craft to create little hats for babies. The new crochet hooks have even allowed me to start learning how to crochet, something that I am finding difficult, but I will not give up and am waiting for the day that I create my first crocheted hat! Your donation allowed me to master my craft and to pick up new methods. I was amazed by how quickly we were able to receive the donations and I am excited for the year to come and to see how many hats I can make in my final year of high school.
Thank you for the donations,
Sam”

Make a Hat, Warm a Heart
Funded Nov 15, 2017We were astonished to see all of our donations arrive so quickly! We immediately began to utilize them. These donations made us want to create even more hats. We want to make five baby hats every month as our goal and we plan to increase our number as our skills improve. We love our yarn and plan to have many baby hats for next year.
Our plan is to keep this Have a Hat Club going with our new supplies and now we can welcome even more students into our service club. We have about twenty students who attend every Monday afternoon for an hour to learn, share, and teach each other.
We have learned the importance of giving back to our community, appreciating the art of knitting and thinking creatively. We are very grateful to be a part of this club where we can spread love and happiness to help brighten other people's lives and be functional, useful, and productive members of our school and community.

"Have a Hat"
Funded Oct 3, 2016When I started to knit during my Sophomore year, it was a very good club to join and interact with others in an area that I am not familiar with because I am more familiar with cooking. I joined the "Have a Hat" club to learn to knit because it is something new to learn. Also, my niece was born the same year and I wanted to make a headband for her. I made her a pink headband for her to wear. It fit her perfectly!
Even though I am a male, I enjoyed the knitting and crocheting and I encouraged other male classmates, and some females, to come and join. Some of my friends stayed after school and others thought about coming. At the end of my Sophomore we donated over 70 items to Lowell General Hospital.
During my Junior year, I wrote a grant through Donors Choose to increase our program to include lap robes for adult cancer patients and baby blankets for premature infants. The grant was called "Have a Hat & Blanket." We donated 10 blankets and 25 hats to Lowell general Hospital at the end of the year. We had about six males participating after school and twelve females attending regularly.
Now, as a Senior, I am still encouraging friends to come and participate in this fantastic program. Even though people say males do not knit or crochet, I have proved them wrong because I am here to help. I plan to keep on making hats and blankets for this good cause, and knitting is a great skill to know. (from student J.P.)”

This classroom project was brought to life by Gates Foundation & Think It Up Supporters and one other donor.Have a Hat & Blanket
Funded Dec 2, 2015Through the Have a Hat Program, I have learned many skills. As it is a knitting and crocheting club, the main skill I learned was how to knit, but the purpose for knitting was also very important. Our purpose for knitting was to supply hats to premi babies, who are born prematurely and have many problems due to this. The problem that we focus on is providing clothes that will keep them warm because it is difficult to find clothing that will fit their minuscule bodies.
This program can help me later on in life because it educates me on premi babies and some of the difficulties they face, so that if I were to experience this situation, I'd know how to handle the situation. Knitting can also be an important skill because it allows me to create objects and learn how to read directions properly in order to have the best results for a project. The ability to follow directions is very important in life because when working on a job, there may be certain guidelines attached to it that could have disastrous outcomes if they aren't followed. Due to this, Have a Hat has been able to provide me with skills and lessons that will assist me later on in life due to the fact that life can be unpredictable and jobs can be very strict.
We learned to crochet and make blankets, lap robes, headbands, and also hats to help cancer patients. We plan to donate again to the Oncology Department and Neonatal Unit at our local hospital.”

Funded Dec 3, 2013Students are interested to take time to learn about science and discuss the articles and facts that they are exposed to through Scholastic Science World. The interest that students show in Biology class is astounding. Questions arise all the time and our texts are not enough to meet interest levels. The enrichment of the Scholastic Science World Magazine has added to our classroom discussions and lead to further questions. The current topics in Science World are of high interest to students and this leads to continuing questions.
When students are engaged in discussions about Biology and the world around them additional questions arise. It is my hope that deeper scientific interest with a direct link to the world around us will help to keep students motivated to learn. The link from the classroom to the world around us is very important to stimulate and encourage in all students. My students are very appreciative of the donations you have given in support of our class wish to obtain Scholastic Science World Magazine. Thank you sincerely for your assistance and donations to our student project fund World of Science and the ability to enhance the learning process of students.”
