While wildfires and coronavirus have dampened the spirits of our community, I want to make learning fun again for my students by taking a break from excessive technology usage and getting books into the hands of my middle school students, and allowing creative juices to flow in our English Language ARTS classroom. I want to add creative elements to our lessons to help bring that sunshine back to the learning process with art in the classroom, engaging language activities, and high interest books for my students. I've noticed that many of my students don't consider themselves "readers," and I'd like to change that by introducing First Chapter Fridays with books they can take home that very same day. Our school is working with the SpringBoard curriculum, but I often incorporate interactive notebooks, image analyses, character and setting illustrations (to help with analyzing mood and author's choice/craft), gallery walks, color coded essay outlines, book projects, posters, and other engaging activities to make the rigorous curriculum more enjoyable. I am taking an Emphasizing Art in the Classroom professional development course next week. I'm excited to learn more ideas of how to implement art in the classroom. Our school does not receive Title I funds. Many of the teachers and students have to provide materials out of their own pockets. As this is my first year at this school, I would love to build more classroom resources and materials for my kiddos. Thank you!
