  • Measuring Up to the Metric System

    Funded Nov 13, 2024

I am thrilled to share the impact of our project, "Measuring Up to the Metric System," and how the materials acquired have transformed teaching and learning in my classroom. This initiative was designed to provide my students with hands-on experiences to master the metric system, a critical foundation for scientific inquiry and real-world applications.

With the funding we received, we purchased updated, modern metric measurement tools, including rulers, measuring tapes and distance measuring wheels. These resources have enabled my students to engage directly with the equipment, fostering a deeper understanding of measurement concepts in physics, physical science and environmental science.

The project unfolded over a series of interactive lab sessions where students applied metric measurements to real-world scenarios. The integration of these tools has brought new energy to our science curriculum. Lessons are now more engaging, collaborative, and student-centered. For many students, it was their first opportunity to use such equipment, which significantly increased their confidence and interest in STEM fields.

The benefits of this project have been profound. Students have developed competency in metric measurement techniques, a skill set essential for college and career readiness. Their participation in hands-on activities increased overall enthusiasm for science and active classroom involvement. One of my students shared, "I've always struggled with math and science, but using the equipment made it click for me. I finally understand how measurements work in the real world!"

I am deeply grateful for your generosity, which made this project possible. Your support has enriched the learning environment and has opened doors for my students to envision a future in STEM. The tools provided by this grant will continue to benefit students for years to come, ensuring that we are building a solid foundation for lifelong learning. Thank you once again for your commitment to education and for believing in our vision to "Measure Up to the Metric System."”

  • High School Chemistry Chemicals Phase 2

    Funded Apr 10, 2024

The impact of receiving chemicals in a chemistry class where there were previously none is significant, both in terms of student learning experiences and the overall chemistry program's development.

The introduction of chemicals into a chemistry class opens a world of practical learning opportunities for students. Chemistry is a subject deeply rooted in experimentation and hands-on activities. Having access to a diverse range of chemicals allows students to conduct experiments that demonstrate fundamental chemical principles in action. For example, they can explore reactions such as acid-base titrations, oxidation-reduction reactions, and chemical equilibrium dynamics. This firsthand experience not only enhances their understanding of theoretical concepts but also fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deeper appreciation for the subject.

Moreover, the presence of chemicals in the classroom enables chemistry teachers to design more comprehensive and engaging curriculum plans. They can incorporate a wider variety of laboratory activities, demonstrations, and projects that align with learning objectives and standards. This enriched curriculum not only makes learning chemistry more exciting but also ensures that students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for further studies or careers in STEM fields.

On the institutional level, the availability of chemicals can have a positive impact on the overall chemistry program. It will allow this school to offer advanced courses. which require access to specific reagents and equipment. This diversification of course offerings will attract students with varying interests and aspirations, contributing to a more robust and inclusive academic environment.

Furthermore, having a well-equipped chemistry program enhances the school's reputation and competitiveness. It signals to prospective students, parents, and stakeholders that the institution is committed to providing high-quality science education with ample opportunities for hands-on learning and research. This can lead to increased enrollment, retention of talented faculty members, and partnerships with industry or research institutions, further enriching the educational experience and fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation.

However, it's essential to note that the introduction of chemicals into a classroom also comes with responsibilities and considerations regarding safety, storage, handling, and disposal. This school must now adhere to strict safety protocols, provide adequate training to students and staff, maintain proper ventilation and waste management systems, and ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines and best practices in chemical handling. Safety should always be paramount to prevent accidents, injuries, or environmental hazards.

In conclusion, the impact of receiving chemicals in a chemistry class where there were previously none is multifaceted and beneficial. It enhances student learning experiences, enriches the curriculum, strengthens the chemistry program, and contributes to a culture of scientific exploration and discovery. However, it must be accompanied by a strong emphasis on safety, responsibility, and adherence to best practices in chemical management to maximize its positive effects and minimize potential risks.”

  • Chemistry Supplies We Can't Do Without

    Funded Dec 28, 2023

A hands-on approach deepens student understanding and retention of chemistry concepts. The appropriate chemistry equipment ensures a safe learning environment. Beakers and flasks help in measuring and containing substances, while ring stands and clamps secure the apparatus, preventing accidents.

We are using the equipment to perform rudimentary chemistry experiments necessary to pass chemistry. We used the beakers to hold and measure liquids, the flasks to heat liquids safely

These tools enable students to apply theoretical knowledge practically. They can perform reactions, measurements, and analyses, bridging the gap between theory and real-world application.”

One specific moment that stands out is when we received the sets of glassware for our chemistry/physical science classes. The excitement in the room was palpable as the students eagerly gathered around to collect the science equipment for the lab. It was a joy to see their faces light up as they discovered the fun of performing science experiments.

Since then, we've been using the glassware to explore various aspects of chemistry and physical science. We are now conducting experiments, allowing the students to develop their scientific observation skills in a hands-on way. They've been documenting their findings in lab reports and video presentations, fostering critical thinking and communication skills in the process.

As for the next steps, we're currently delving deeper into our study of the physical sciences. With the glassware at our disposal, we're planning to investigate the diversity of the periodic table, elements and compounds and chemical reactions. This will not only deepen their understanding of chemistry concepts but also instill a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world. You have truly empowered us to take our learning to new heights, and we're incredibly grateful for your support.”

Students will use the data collector, temperature probe, and calorimeter to measure caloric values of small amounts of common foods. Each student group will measure the calories of one food sample from each of the food groups. Students may also elect to measure the calories of other substances i.e., Cetyl Alcohol, candy, etc. Using the data collectors, many student groups from different class periods can compare data. This information will then be used by the students to make healthier food choices based on caloric values. Caloric values for various foods will also be checked against label and MSDA data to ensure accuracy.
