Rhythms and Shakers and Drums, Oh My!
Funded Sep 5, 2018My students and I cannot express how grateful we are to have brand new percussion and wind instruments. Music exploration through rhythmic, expressive and composition activities can sometimes have such a profound effect that it can last a lifetime. As a class, the students have been using the variety of percussion instruments to put sounds to words and bring a story to life.
In one instance, we used percussion and recorders to reinforce the musical concept of dynamics with its different ranges of sound. With the aid of a listening map, we were able to use specific instruments due to their timbre to reflect the intensity and mood of the music. After a couple of practices, they no longer needed the map and were excited to express their interpretation of the music as it was being played. This type of connection to music Is priceless.
Our next step is to use these instruments as a model to create their own version out of household objects. We will continue to analyze and reflect the way these sounds vibrate and produce a particular sound. Ultimately, a folk song will be performed with the purchased instruments and then with the invented instruments. Thank you again for your generous donation!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Cordero
