  • Great Books For Great Kids!

    Funded Oct 20, 2021

I can't thank you enough for your generosity in supporting this project. The students in my class have been avidly reading our new books and are delighted to find stories by and about people who look like them. I know this has had a huge effect on my students because I have seen their interest in reading improve both in school and at home.

The new books have filled in gaps in our classroom library, and are being borrowed regularly. During the last period of the day, we either read aloud to the class (Harry Potter) or give students time to read independently. As we all know, Harry Potter is always a popular choice, but lately, students prefer to read on their own.

For Black History month, some of the students in my class participated proudly in a presentation of selected poems written by African Americans, as well as a play about African American inventions. Our students were outstanding! I owe this in part to the confidence they gained from reading our new books, as well as to the general shift in attitudes in classrooms all across our country. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ruderman

  • A Picture Dictionary Is Worth A Thousand Words

    Funded Jan 25, 2015

As soon as my students opened the boxes and saw what was inside, they were squealing with delight! The joy of receiving new books is a very special one. As you know, my students are English Language Learners, and their ability to express themselves in English is limited. The picture dictionaries you have afforded us with allow my first graders to find the words (they know in their native language) and use them in English. Since receiving them, we have used the books to enhance our creative writing; but most of all, the students enjoy just looking at the beautiful pictures in their free time.

I am personally grateful to you, and to Donors Choose, for providing teachers with a way to supplement materials and supplies that are needed in public education to make it more meaningful and fun. It was incredible to go from having a need, to having that need fulfilled in such a short time. I am truly grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ruderman

  • Writer's Word Journal

    Funded Dec 17, 2014

I cannot thank you enough for your generous donation to this project.

When students received their new word journals and markers they were ecstatic! I too was excited. It was such a wonderful feeling knowing that what was inside the package was going to put a huge smile on my students' faces. It certainly did! The books and colorful markers were a wonderful surprise to the class.

Now that they have begun using the books and markers we really feel the impact they have had in improving the quality of instruction and learning that goes on in our classroom.

When learning new topics, students enter the new vocabulary on the proper page. When they write sentences about the subject, the word journals are used to make sure students are spelling correctly. They really just like looking at the pages and reading the words like a book.

The markers have been a wonderful way to enhance student artwork. We recently began a unit of study on weather. Students used the markers to illustrate weather words that are now displayed in the classroom.

Thanks to your support of this project my students are able to become more independent spellers, and more practiced artists.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ruderman

My students are first graders in an inner-city public school. They speak English as a second language and come from families where getting an education was not an option. Many of my students are new to the United States and some have never been in school before. Their parents are dedicated to providing their children with the best possible education, but they are unable to help them with their studies since they are not literate in their native language. Providing students with word journals will allow them the independence they need to be able to complete assignments independently and with confidence.
