• Ambience and Encouragement: Creating a Calm & Supportive Classroom Environment

  I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for your generous support of my classroom project through DonorsChoose. Thanks to your incredible contribution, my students now have access to resources that are transforming our classroom into a calming, peaceful, and welcoming environment.

  The project, centered around creating a Zen atmosphere, has made a significant impact on the daily lives of my students. In an age where distractions, stress, and anxiety are becoming all too common, having a space where students can feel safe, relaxed, and ready to learn is invaluable. Your generosity has enabled us to incorporate elements like calming lighting, sensory tools, and flexible seating, all of which help create a space that promotes mindfulness and focus. This change in atmosphere not only supports academic learning but also nurtures the emotional and mental well-being of each student.

  Before this project was funded, many of my students faced challenges in staying engaged or managing stress throughout the school day. Now, with the new calming resources in place, I have seen a notable difference in their behavior and overall demeanor. Students are more focused, feel more at ease, and are able to approach their work with a sense of calm. For many, this has made a world of difference in their ability to participate fully in the classroom. • Colors of the World: a Flag-tastic Journey

  I hung up many of the flags as soon as they arrived to my classroom. The impact was immediate.

  Students immediately began saying, "That's the Dominican flag!", "You got the Vietnam flag? Thank you!", "Where's the Yemeni flag? Can you get one of those, too?".

  Students were so incredibly happy with the outcome of this project, and the classroom felt immediately brighter.

  We are so grateful for your continued generosity (today and always). Thank you for brining life, color, & representation to our Bronx classroom!”

• Silent Sliders for Classroom (& Building) Harmony

  Funded May 11, 2024

  The teacher in the classroom below ours has already commented on the noticeable difference in noise (or rather, lack thereof). What's more is that the tennis ball sliders add a nice pop of color in our classroom whose color scheme already leans blue.

  The interesting thing is that the tennis balls actually did not fit on our desks, so a very dedicated student cut all 90+ tennis balls to size so that they would fit on our desks.

• Building Thinking Classrooms, Part 4

  Dear Donors,

  I hope this message finds you well and filled with the same warmth and gratitude that fills our classroom every day. Within the past two years, your generous donations through DonorsChoose have made an indelible impact on me and my students, for which we are incredibly thankful.

  In September 2021, we embarked on a journey towards "Building a Thinking Classroom," a format that has since become the heart of our learning environment. Standing daily, engaging with vertically non-permanent surfaces, and focusing on thinking tasks, my students have thrived in ways I hadn't imagined possible. Your support has enabled us to create an atmosphere where students discuss mathematics fearlessly, make mistakes, learn from one another, and progress together.

  Your donations facilitated the purchase of nearly 200 markers in a previous project, which was instrumental in shaping our classroom experience. However, the intensity of our mathematical exploration had depleted our marker supply faster than anticipated. As we stood there in October 2023, we found ourselves in need of replenishment.

  Your continued support has not only provided us with necessary resources but has also instilled in us a sense of community and shared purpose. The markers you've helped us acquire now have become more than just tools; they represent the tangible support of individuals like you who believe in the power of education and investing in the future.

• To See or Not to See? Shades for our Windows

  Funded Sep 29, 2022

  Thank you so very much for providing me and my students the comfort of knowing we can block windows that look into our classroom in the event of an emergency.

  It is, unfortunately, a little bit scary knowing that we have windows that look into our classroom from within the hallways of the school. And any intrude can see in. But the flip side of this is that administrators, other students, and other teachers can see the exciting things we are doing on a daily basis!

  Also, while blocking these windows with paper is somewhat helpful, still shadows are able to be seen which is not helpful in case of an emergency or an intruder.

  Now, while we still have our windows open allowing other students and staff to see what exciting things we are doing, we have the option to completely block these windows with blackout shades thanks to your generosity!”

  Because of your generosity, my students have been able to start off the year with high quality dry erase markers and bountiful erasers.

  In our vertical classroom, nearly every student has at all times an expo marker in-hand, working toward a deeper understand of geometry and calculus. And given that I teach across multiple classrooms, having hundreds of high-quality dry erase markers at my disposal makes such a significant impact on my day to day operations.
