Students were thrilled to open the boxes and see the new ukuleles! We have used them in music explorations and in our 2nd grade classes. We will be using a video ukulele curriculum beginning next fall. The goal is to make our 2nd/3rd graders independent musicians who can sing and accompany themselves.
Our curriculum begins in Kindergarten/first with hand percussion, xylophones and drums our second graders add ukulele our third graders will add recorder and our 4/5 grades will add world drumming and guitar. Our elementary students have rich musical experiences!

My school is a Title One bilingual New York City public school established in 2013. It is located in one of the oldest school buildings in Manhattan. My students come from all over upper Manhattan to be taught in a school that celebrates their home culture and language; while teaching them a new language. We have approximately half English speakers and half Spanish speakers, allowing our beautiful students to learn from each other as well as their teachers (who are all fluent in both English and Spanish). We have many amazing opportunities for students to learn by doing including our school garden and a field trip a month for each class. Unfortunately, we don't currently have enough classroom instruments. You can help change that!
