Funded Dec 29, 2013I would like to begin by saying thank you so very much for your unbelievable gift to my students. I am still overwhelmed by your generosity and true desire to help my students grow! I hope that I am able to share with you how incredibly powerful your gift has been.
When I first told with my students that I wrote about their love for Mo Willems' books and that someone bought us ALL of the books, they were initially confused. One of my students raised her hand and asked "Why?". I shared each of them that the person who purchased the books for us must know what it is to love books, love reading, and wants them all to love it too. They immediately wanted to know who it was that did this wonderful thing. I told them that I didn't know who it was and they became angry! They wanted write Thank You cards with your name and tell you how excited they were to read each of the books. I continued to tell them that the person who spent money to buy them books must believe that we are important and really wanted us to have these books.
When the package arrived at our school, the students were ecstatic, to the point where they were telling other students, teachers, and parents about the donation. I brought the box into the classroom and it it sat on my desk until the end of the day. We opened the package together. The students' faces when I took the books out were absolutely priceless (I uploaded one picture I was able to take of their cheering). Because it was such a special gift, we wanted to enjoy each of the books together first before putting them on our bookshelves. Prior having the students read them on their own, I read aloud each of the stories to the students so that we could laugh and enjoy the literature together. Now, the students beg to be able to read each of the books, want to bring the books to recess, bring them home, ask their parents to bring them to the bookstore and library, and continue to read them over and over again. My students are having conversations about the literature, discussing the characters, and talking about authors, like real scholars.
As my students go to choose a Mo Willems book, I can see in their faces and hear in their voices as they read that they are reading because they want to, not because they have to. This is an incredible gift, one that cannot be bought. To know the beauty of literature is something that one must experience and because of your generosity, each of my students now has.
We will never be able to thank you enough!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Reyes
