  • Medieval is Not Evil

    Funded Feb 19, 2011

My students and I are so grateful for your generous spirit and for supporting our learning. The students who benefited from your donation were introduced to literature that is typically used at the college level. For many of them, it was their first novel in Spanish. You can imagine the sense of accomplishment it gave them to be able to understand the text and discuss it. From the teacher perspective, it gave me great joy to share my passion for Peninsular literature.

Thank you many times over for helping bring a piece of Spanish history into our school! If you ever feel moved to read a simple, but thematically robust and witty novel from the 16th century, let me know! I'll lend you a copy of one of our books!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Manuel

  • Studying Environmental Sustainability in the Dominican Republic

    Funded Mar 22, 2011

Each of the 7 students who participated in the service-learning program in the Dominican Republic were profoundly impacted by the experience. During the trip, we performed over 15 hours of community service. We had 2 main projects: to rebuild a dilapidated home in the mountains and to build a community garden in a Haitian refugee camp. We worked alongside amazing community leaders to participate in making positive change. We also met with local experts to learn about water conservation, alternative forms of energy and other topics related to sustainability.

My students were blown away by the experience. For several of them, it was the first time they had ever been outside of the US and/or done service work. It is because of our collective effort, including your generous spirit, that made this trip possible. A heartfelt thank you for believing in the work that educators do and in the potential of these 7 budding leaders. ”

  • Migrant Families ~ Right Here in Our City

    Funded Sep 18, 2009

Thank you so much for your donation of the short story collection and audio version of the book. Too bad I can't write the name of my school here because I'd love to invite you to our school next year when I use the books you donated again. That book provided the groundwork for our unit on the migrant experience in the US. My students learned how relevant the topic is in our city and made connections to their own immigration experiences. I organized a video conference with a school in Fresno, California so my students could talk to other teens from migrant backgrounds. I think that this unit is one of the units that my students will be carrying with them for a life time.

Thank you again for your kindness and for investing in education.”

  • How Does One Person Act in the Face of Adversity?

    Funded Dec 13, 2008

I was THRILLED when I saw that my request had been met! I was starting to give up hope. The timing was impeccable in that I received the email at the end of a very challenging week at work. I rode my bike home from school with a big smile on my face!

Guatemala is a country near and dear to my heart. I am so excited that my students will get a chance to hear Rigoberta Menchu's story.

Muchísimas gracias for supporting me and my students by getting us these books”
