My ESL students are as driven and motivated as their native-English speaking peers. But as they are learning both a language and new content simultaneously, they are chasing a moving target. Our school is Title I, with move than half free and reduced lunch, and a 41% mobility rate (the highest in our district) do to the boundaries serving 19 apartment complexes. The new Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards are far more rigorous than the previous standards, and the level of language expected to comprehend and produce has been substantially increased. Our ESL population continues to increases as the demographics of our state is changing, and we need resources that support and scaffold their learning to both aid them in learning the language while simultaneously learning the content. The goal of course is for them to become independent learners who have mastered the new standards. The grant will fund resources that allow them multiple opportunities to succeed.
