Our school district has enacted a district-wide recycling plan. The lunchroom is now sorting its trash into food waste, trash, and milk cartons. The compost bins will be placed in the school garden in the kindergarten area, and students will hypothesize what materials will compost and which will not. This will actually be the science fair project for our grade level. A Chinese proverb states: Tell me, I'll forget Show me, I'll remember Involve me, I'll understand Common Core emphasizes critical thinking skills and project-based learning, which can be later applied to the real world. By having the students provide trash, be responsible for daily management and observation, and come to a conclusion at the end of the project, they will learn not only about recycling and composting, but they will be participating in collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking which are the four tenets of Common Core learning. In addition, this will support the Kindergarten standard which deals with recycling and understanding our impact on the planet.
