My students were very excited when they received the new calculators. As I described in my project, we have a class set of graphing calculators that we have been using for approximately 7 years. Several had the screen damaged and some of them simply do not turn on. Thanks to your generous contribution, now the class set is replenished. From now on each student will have their own calculator to use in class without having to share back and forth.

A welcome surprise was to find out that these newer version of the TI-84 comes with a new operating system that we were able to copy on to our old calculators. Calculating derivatives and integrals is easier and faster with this new operating system. Using the old system, it was confusing to remember the sequence of steps to access the menus and then the syntax required for the calculator to understand the question. This new system places the derivative and integral commands more accessible and uses the same mathematical notation as a student would use when they are justifying their answers.

My students will now have an advantaged as they prepare to take the national advanced placement calculus exam. Before each had student had their own calculator to use in class, they did not feel comfortable using them. Having to share them, each student did not have enough time with the calculator to feel confident with their calculator skills. As a teacher, I could not even include questions on tests where they had to use a calculator, since each student did not have one. From now on, my students only have to worry about how to solve calculus problems since they will have master the technology required to do well in the exam.”

With gratitude,
