Books are Food for the Brain!
Funded Dec 15, 2021Our students are elated to have quick access to these picture books in our classroom. We are always talking about making connections when we read a story, like text to text, text to self, or text to the world, to help us understand the story better. We also make inferences about the stories because sometimes the author doesn't tell us so we need to look for clues from the text or pictures to tell what is happening. The students love to retell the story after they read about it. They also get to go home and retell the story to their family members for extra incentives. First graders enjoy drawing a picture of what they've visualized while reading the book.
Other skills are taught through the donated books also. New vocabulary words are learned weekly through these books. We are also able to add on a writing lesson with each book read, like an opinion writing, sequence writing, or cause and effect writing. With each story, we tie in an art lesson or other hands on activity such as egg-dying for the story "The Bunny's Assistant."
Books are also a great medium for students to build relationships with their peers. They share and discuss the interesting pictures and facts from the books with their classmates. They share and and help each other learn to read a book together. They build new friendships through the common interest with books.
Our first graders are building their love for books and learning so many new skills with the books you've donated to our classroom! They are feeding their brains everyday through books!”

Funded Nov 5, 2013The Ladi-bug Document Camera is one of the most resourceful tools in our classroom. We use it all day long and every single day! There isn't a day when it is not turned on. Our students were super excited when I showed them what the document camera can do. Students are saying that "It is fun to use!" Others say, "It helps me see better and learn more!"
Students are able to practice their public speaking skills by being the "teacher". They would place their work under the Ladi-bug, project it onto the board, and then explain how they got their answers in front of the class. My second grade students are proud to show off their works. Also, other students are more attentive when their classmates are teaching.
As a teacher I can demonstrate lots of lessons with the Ladi-bug. In one of the math lesson we can use real 3-dimensional manipulative to show regrouping tens to hundreds! For reading, I can project the book and show students exactly where I got my information or answers in the story. This tool has been a great investment for our classroom. We are so grateful for having the Ladi-bug in our classroom! Thank you again for your generous donations!”
