Autism on the Move - Becoming Digital Learners
Funded Dec 18, 2015The laptop has revolutionized my classroom in many ways. I use it as part of my technology center and as a tool to reinforce positive behavior.
As part of their technology center, students have used the laptop to access district approved programs, which help develop their reading and math skills. The laptop has also provided students access to iBooks, animated stories and other educational related content. The hands-on and visual exposure has helped students stay engaged and focused which is very beneficial when teaching students with learning disabilities.
Additionally, the laptop is used as a tool to develop citizenship skills in the classroom as well as a means to reinforce positive behavior. While all of the students get equal time on the device, they also get an opportunity to increase their usage time. Students accrue points throughout the day for displaying good citizenship skills and behavior; those points are used as extra time on the laptop. This has been very effective in improving students' behavior.
The laptop has added so much to our classroom. We cannot say thank you enough for such a generous gift.”

Bridging the Digital Gap!
Funded Jan 16, 2015The two iPads donated to my classroom were wonderful gifts and they have had a real positive impact on my students. From the minute that I unboxed the devices, I had the students' attention. Working with students with learning disabilities is a challenge and it can difficult to keep them on task and engaged. The iPads help to mitigate this problem while being effective at the same time. They are interactive and keep students engaged as they are learning. Whether students are working on interactive math problems or reading animated stories together, they are glued to the screen of the device. They are also learning social and citizenship skills as they have to take turn and share the devices.
My Classroom management has also improved since I have been using the iPads. Via Wi-Fi connectivity, I am able to project content from the iPad on to the smart board. This allows me the flexibility to walk around the classroom as I am teaching with the iPad in hand. When we are ready to move into our small groups, the students make the transition quietly and orderly because they know they are going to get an opportunity to use the iPads.
My students and I are very grateful and appreciative of this amazing gift. It is a delight for me to see the expressions on my students' faces as they are using the devices. They are learning the same curriculum through a different medium; it makes the "old", new and fresh again in the classroom.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Merovee
