  • Beauty in the Written Word

    Funded Oct 2, 2017

Deepest thanks and appreciation for your donation to my project. The materials donated helped impact the students in better understanding not just the continued necessity of legible penmanship, but exposed them to the possibilities of how words - particularly their names - can look and be viewed on paper.

The final phase of this project was only the first step in exposing the students to new tools in writing and creating expressively. The completed works were submitted to a local Youth Fair for submission in one of the Arts and Crafts divisions. Taking pride in their finished work using a skill they only recently took up takes courage. My students are standing up to the challenge, and are looking forward to seeing what their individual creations will reap as far as recognition for both themselves and the school.

I also look forward to future projects with the donated materials as the next school year will present more artistic challenges for my students as well as for myself. Looking to the Future always presents new possibilities for teaching and education of any kind. I look forward to that Future.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hall

  • Creative Penmanship = Artistic Words

    Funded Oct 5, 2016

Thank you so much for the generous donation you made. This project ignited my students realization of what was possible by looking at hand writing from a more artistic point of view.

The use of the digital Wacom tablet proved to be a little limiting as most of the students preferred the more "real-world" use of paper and pen, since the tablet did not provide an immediate, tangible product. Eye-opening in the beginning, being able to produce or create quickly, regardless of technological advancement, the tablet just didn't measure up to their expectations - at least not as yet. As my skill with the table is limited due to the short amount of time I have had it in use, I'd imagine I will be able to showcase the tablet's capability a bit more on future projects.

The various markers / pens that were donated allowed the students to approach their handwriting as another creative outlet. With the students being used to writing essays or reports with pen or pencil, they were amazed as I showed them the process of being artistic with their hand writing. Hand-outs and videos from YouTube, as well as my incorporation of traditional art-creating tools (Crayola markers and crayons), showed the students that calligraphy and "fancy writing" doesn't have to be that difficult. it is more about expression and feasibility. Can you be creative or visually artistic in your writing? Yes!

Overall, the brush pens were the biggest hit as most of the students were not even aware of them. Again, the immediate feedback provided by the brush pens kept the students engaged, and prompted many to ask where they could purchase their own, and more encouraging, "When can we use these in another project, Mr. Hall?"

I couldn't ask for a more satisfying end-of-project result than the request for further exploration of a newly-discovered creative outlet from my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hall

  • Penmanship: Handwritten Expression at Its Finest

    Funded Nov 13, 2015

Thank you for your generous donation to my Art project. The materials provided allowed my 5th Grade students to explore a bit of Typography and the incorporation of their signature into a creative project. the Decorated Letter showed the students how something as simple as a block letter form can become colorful backdrop for an elegant (if not slightly rudimentary) hand-written signature.

Fifth Graders are usually assigned Art projects that require more steps in the process, and in most cases push their abilities with the materials they are most familiar with. In the beginning, many of the students were not too happy to be using their signature in the project, as it is still a relatively new process in their writing development. After discussion and a bit of practice and letter exploration, the students embraced the idea of what the project entailed. What really opened their eyes was the introduction of the paint markers, a really big step from the regular markers we use in class.

Through example, and a lot of reassurances on my part, the students created some truly unique pieces that I am really proud of as more than a few of them had their doubts about what the end result would be, and I hope gained a bit more pride in what they can do artistically with their hands as well as the hand-written letter.

I look forward to our future adventures in hand-lettering and typographic exploration.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hall

  • Color Brings Clay ... to Life!

    Funded Oct 30, 2015

Thank you so much for your generous donation! The second graders were the main focus of this project, and they always appreciate the opportunity to create something new artistically- particularly if they deem it something "the older kids get to do". It is always a joy when I announce a new project to the students especially if it involves materials they are not used to. This clay project had the students shouting with glee and anticipation when we talked about it.

In the past, I didn't have the opportunity to do glazing of finished clay pieces with my students because I didn't have the resources to purchase them. Your donation will provide enough glaze and color for at least the next few clay projects I have in mind. The materials that were purchased provided further opportunity for my students to express themselves and to explore more possibilities with clay. Hopefully, this project will help expand their creative thoughts and continue to spark their interest and desire to explore other materials and pathways in Art.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hall

  • Expression through Imagination

    Funded Nov 15, 2013

Your generous donation will allow my 5th grade classes to continue with their skill and creative development as they prepare for middle school. As the final Fifth Grade Book Project approaches in the final 9 week grading period, I am looking forward to immersing my students in this project that will allow them start from scratch to plan, develop, conceptualize, and in the end produce a hand-made book based on their individual imaginations and creative style.

The materials donated will help students with note taking, brainstorming, thumbnail creation (during the rough draft phase), and in the end the realization of the whole process with a book that will physically express their artistic and educational journey.

I regard my 5th Graders as young artists-in-training (or creatives-in-training), and even though they may not go on to pursue continuing education in the visual arts, my point is to show them that just about any aspect of life - finance, business, entertainment, research, etc. can benefit from visual enhancement through presentation and a little artistic manipulation. The book project keeps the students focused on their individual idea, and at completion allows them to hold and reflect on a journey they initiated.

I am very excited to see the final projects!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hall

Hello, Over the years I've taught students from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade. The one thing that keeps every day interesting is how each child, in each grade, at one point or another "gets it." They move forward in their artistic development creating art projects (at times cautiously), to express and share what they've learned. Basics like paper, pencils, crayons and markers are still the staple items used to inspire creativity. As my students learn and develop their artistic skills, growth in their abilities allows for creative exploration, which gives way to confidence, and in turn sets them on a personal journey of artistic expression. Educating my students, and witnessing their growth year to year provides continued surprise and endearing pride.
