One of my students recently asked me, "Mr. C., when are you going to teach me how to play guitar?" Research has shown how studying music may help students' cognitive and emotional development. We are a brand new public school currently instructing our first year of 6th graders in East New York, Brooklyn. We receive title I and title III funding, but are still short on resources and materials. We have an amazing group of 117 students who fill our school with life and energy. East New York is one of New York City's most impoverished neighborhoods and it has one of the highest crime-rates in the city. Our students do not have the same opportunities and resources available to them as students in more privileged communities, and they face challenges that students in other communities are not asked to overcome. My students do not have the opportunity to take electives such as music or art. They do not have gym every day. They are in need of more creative outlets.
