  • Therapeutic Tools for Students With Sensory Sensitivities!

    Funded Jan 27, 2022

Thank you for your donations to the PS110 therapy room! The students were beyond excited to enter the therapy room and see new sensory tools. All the tools donated are student approved - They love them!

The vibrating pillow is a student favorite and they love hugging the pillow to help them feel calm. Students have been using the noise canceling headphones and/or earplugs during OT sessions and also in class to help decrease noxious sounds. We notice improvements in focus and task completion when they are using these strategies. Lastly, Some of our students with tactile defensiveness have started using therapeutic brushing as part of their calming routines at school and at home.

My students and I are grateful for your support!! Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brock

  • Bean Bag Chairs for Break Areas

    Funded Sep 3, 2021

I feel so fortunate that our school is well prepared now that we have had our "Bean Bag Chairs for Break Areas" Donors Choose project funded. Each classroom now has a bean bag chair in their break area for student to use when they need to refocus or are feeling stressed/upset/frustrated/etc. I see student's taking these breaks when I enter classrooms and it fills me with joy that they have this support from our school.

Thank you to all our donors for making this possible. We will continue to use these bean bag chairs and support our students to manage stress and refocus for years to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brock

  • Supportive Seating and Sensory Tools for Student's Homes

    Funded May 12, 2020

Thank you so much for your donation towards home OT supplies for my students. My student's were able to use some of the adaptive seating options and sensory tools they are used to in school, at home during remote learning. I loved seeing them using these tools and more engaged during teletherapy sessions.

My students were beyond excited getting a special OT package sent to their home. They beamed and said thank you when they signed on for their teletherapy sessions. I am thankful that I could give them something to smile about during these challenging times.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brock

  • Wobble While You Work!

    Funded Dec 4, 2019

The PS 84 occupational therapy team (of 2) feel so fortunate and well prepared now that we have had our "Wobble While you Work" Donors Choose project funded. We are able to trial different seating options with our students during OT sessions to find the right fit for each student. It's great to see our students advocating for themselves by asking to use specific chairs that they like the best.

When we see that a certain seating option helps a student sit calmer, engage more, or increase their focus, we have them try it in class. We are now able to issue out flexible seating options to our student's classrooms. They are able to move, wiggle, sit or stand while learning in class.

Thank you to all our donors for making this possible. We will continue to use these seating options for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brock

There are four different types of learners: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. Teachers often take this into account and do their best to incorporate each of the different learning styles into every lesson. Where a student chooses to sit has just as big an impact on their learning as how the information is presented. Some students feel most comfortable and engaged when they can move while others are able to maintain attention in the same position for hours at a time. The adaptive seating we will provide students the option to choose and explore the different types of seating that can help them learn best. Students who prefer to move while they learn can use a wobble stool, while those who just need a slightly more flexible surface can use a wobble cushion. Adaptive seating is a safe, non-disruptive method to accommodate the seating needs of P.S. 84 students to facilitate their best learning environment.
