Broadening Perspectives with Gabi
Funded Nov 7, 2024Thank you so much for your donation to my classroom. My students were so completely engaged in reading "Gabi, a Girl in Pieces". They were exposed to serious and relevant subject matters that they don't always get to discuss in school. They conversations regarding the book were lively and spirited, but always respectful of others' experiences and points of view.
As a final project, students were given the opportunity to create a Zine (like the main character in the novel) or create a One-Pager demonstrating their understanding and takeaways from the novel. The end results was phenomenal! My students poured their hearts and souls into these projects and created some incredible works of art. Our final activity with the book was to participate in a Socratic Seminar, in which students take the initiative to hold a discussion about the book and its topics. My classes were able to engage in meaningful and relevant discourse surrounding the topics of double standards between genders, race, drug addiction, teenage pregnancy and other important subject matters.
None of this would have been possible without your help, so thank you again!”

Kulia I Ka Nu'u
Funded Oct 18, 2013Words cannot express how grateful we are for your generous contributions to our learning. When my students received the Chromebooks they were so excited! Their first question was, "Ms., are these for us to use?!" They were dying to use the new technology and excited that these Chromebooks were a class set and that they would always have access to them should they need it.
After explaining to them that the Chromebooks are tools they could use to research their Kulia topics, they couldn't wait get started. The first couple classes, students were able to explore the Chromebooks and really learn how they worked and become comfortable with them. In previous classes, students had begun conducting research on their topics using text encyclopedias and newspapers but they were becoming frustrated with the amount of information these resources provided them. The introduction of the Chromebooks into the classroom allowed them the freedom to really dive in to their research and get more specific information as to their global problem and its causes, the short term and long term effects of the problem, and possible solutions to the problem. They are much more invested in their learning because they have access to the information they need.
As a teacher, having access to the Chromebooks for my students has allowed me to really open their eyes and expose them to the vast amount of resources and information that the web offers. I have been able to introduce my students to online encyclopedias and newspapers that have provided them valuable information for their research projects. They are also learning how to navigate the web and they are beginning to understand that not everything on the web is a reliable source. They have already done several mini lessons in which they had to identify reliable vs. unreliable sources on the web and describe how they can identify sources that they can use. With each passing day, they are learning to become more tech savvy students who are driven to explore the wealth of information that lies at their fingertips.”
With gratitude,
