Harlem Renaissance Masters
Funded Dec 12, 2017My students and I are so excited to be able to paint again this year. Until your generous donation, we weren't sure that it was going to happen. We got off to a bit of a late start for our Harlem Renaissance unit, but it was because my kids are kind and spent their time hand sewing stuffed animals for the children of Puerto Rico for Christmas. After we finish these paintings, we will host a Mother's Day paint night fundraiser. We look forward to bringing in a little bit of extra money for our art program.”

Draw Me In, Then Paint Me Gorgeous!
Funded Oct 24, 2016We have started using the supplies you generously donated to my students.
In our first project we used the watercolor brushes for a painting assignment. My 7th graders were given a poem about the autumn season to illustrate. The results were amazing.
Presently, my 9th graders are using the kneaded erasers, tortillons and stumps to assist them in creating their self-portraits using drawing pencils.
My kids have so little. It's a pleasure watching them in art class using the correct supplies for their projects rather than just having to make due with whatever we can find.”

I Came In Like A Racking Ball!
Funded May 17, 2016Dear Donors:
Thank you for the kind donations. Because of you, we were able to get drying racks for our classroom. This year was the first time my kids had art class since elementary school (or ever), and the first time my students ever painted. It was such a popular lesson that students from other grades have been asking to be able to paint. Our lack of space to place our paintings was evident and difficult this year. We're trying to expand the art department, but that had put us in a bad place with painting, until now! We are so happy to have the new drying racks because two grades at a time can now paint!”

Funded Mar 9, 2016We had an art show last night and had nowhere to hang my students' paintings. My assistant principal was able to borrow a couple double room dividers from a local organization. Unfortunately, every time we put up a painting, it fell down. There seemed to be an issue with the scratchy fabric surface of the boards.
As we were on the verge of placing the paintings on tables, our brand new 5 panel portable room divider was delivered! It wasn't supposed to arrive for two more days. It was as if someone heard our prayers. The paintings went up, easy as pie. My kids were so proud to show their paintings to their families, many posing for pictures with their creations. I can't thank you enough for your generous donation! You truly saved the day.”

The Harlem Renaissance - Painting and the Humanities
Funded Dec 31, 2015My kids are so incredibly happy to be painting! Today, while they were working on their assignment, they were actually singing. I've never witnessed such joy! One of my students ran over to me at the end of class and told me that today was her favorite class of any kind, ever! I wish you could see my kids in action. I've never seen such an excited group of students. A bunch of them even showed up today during lunch to paint, something that is in no way required. Thank you for making this project happen!”

Funded Oct 31, 2015This week has been a blast for my kids. I told them they'd be making jewelry when we came back from Christmas break. They were so happy to start working with the polymer clay you so kindly made available to them. Each student was able to choose four colors for their project. I taught them how to create three types of beads. Without a doubt, the one that made them most thrilled was the marbled bead. I kept hearing my name as they excitedly called me over to show me how their colors blended. My students can't wait to see how their creations turn out. You have put joy in my kids' eyes!”

Dry Me a River
Funded Nov 2, 2015I can't even begin to tell you how appreciative my students and I are of your donation! We just happened to be using watercolor paints the day our drying racks arrived. Up until that moment, I had planned to have my kids place their abstract paintings on shelving, books and window sills around our classroom to dry. My colleague came into our room to announce their arrival, and my students were able to use them that day, right out of the box. Rather than showing pictures of drying racks, I thought you'd enjoy photos of their creations!
Happy New Year!”

Crazy Colors!
Funded Oct 29, 2015The day our supplies arrived, my kids couldn't wait to get their hands on them. Most had never worked with watercolors before and were so anxious to try! They were amazed at how thick the paper was and how soft the brushes felt.
Our assignment was abstract art. We had been studying Wassily Kandinsky and I wanted my students to create a painting with his style in mind. One young lady asked if she could send the donors a bouquet of flowers as a thank you. So, please note the first photo. This picture is from a lovely, young artist.”

All the Drawings in the World
Funded Mar 18, 2015We received all of our supplies this week. On Wednesday, we began working with the hard and soft pencils. Included in these sets were kneaded erasers. I pulled one out of its wrapper and explained why they are such a great product. My kids were mesmerized watching as it started stretching. One of my students screamed, "Mrs. Morello, you're going to break it!" It was amazing to watch their innocent faces as I put it right back together again. It really appealed to their tactile side. They all unwrapped their erasers and started to play. Thank you for letting my children be children!”

Super Cool Greeting Card Fundraiser
Funded Dec 7, 2014The minute these supplies arrived, our school secretary started an after school club. Our young ladies sit together with her and make cards in the afternoon. After they put together the first group, they priced each one from $1-$3. In the first day they tried selling them, they made just over $100! The money is going towards defraying the cost of the senior trip. Not only are our children having fun, they're learning the value of a dollar (and the hard work involved in earning that dollar). Thank you to all of you for your generous donation!”
