I teach in an impoverished area where for the last 15 years, I have met some of the sweetest, brightest, and and most loving kids and families in the entire world! My students come from a variety of backgrounds, several of which are impoverished. Often, my kids don't have the opportunity to access many outside cultural activities. Their extracurricular activities are often dictated by what is accessible to them within "walking distance". For many, school is the only place they will ever get to participate in experiences that stimulate creativity, build background knowledge, or quite simply, encourage them to explore and imagine what is beyond their reach.
