  • Awesome Alphabet Activities

    Funded Oct 29, 2009

I don't even know where to begin. The materials that were purchased for my classroom have already made an impact on the students learning and we only received them two weeks ago. The students love the Alphabet Wheel. We start each morning off with the chant "What do you want me to do?" and the students reply "Spin that Wheel". The children have had a lot of fun completing the activities included in this kit. The hands on materials have been an so vital to the students' understanding of their letter sounds. We use the materials for whole group activities as well as independent activities. I have just recently had an autistic student enter my classroom who is very low academically. These materials have been amazing to work with and have enriched his instruction so much.”

  • Calendar Math

    Funded Apr 17, 2009

Your generous calendar gifts have been a wonderful addition to my classroom routine. Calendar is a wonderful time to introduce new concepts and provide a constant review of material we have covered throughout the year. The children in my class struggle to retain information and need constant review throughout the year.

We have created a wonderful opening routine to our day using the materials you have provided us with. Every day one student is allowed to be the teacher and lead the class in calendar. They love to be the teacher. They say children learn more when they interact with others then they do when a teacher does all the talking. This is a hands on opportunity for my students to learn. It also offers them communication practice and the chance to improve their public speaking skills.

Using the calendar material I am able to teach and reinforce odd and even numbers, counting money, place value as well as basic calendar skills and many more. We continue to add math skills every month into our routine.

During these difficult economic times, it is through generous people like you that allow educators to continue to provide students with materials they need to grow academically.

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Boyce

  • We're All in the Family with Word Famlies

    Funded Mar 6, 2009

I can't thank you enough for your generosity. The word family materials you purchased for my class have had such a positive impact on our classroom learning environment. I use these materials during my direct instruction because they provide my students with wonderful hands on learning. I also use the materials at an independent center for practice and review. The children love using the magnets to make words. They are so proud of themselves every time they read and write words independently. After practicing with the word sliders, magnets and word wheels the children read the word family readers and although they still need help with some of the words, they are reading the word family and simple sight words independently and this has helped their self esteem tremendously. One of the most difficult things about teaching a self-contained special education classroom is the different academic levels of the students in the classroom. The children in this room are kindergarten through third grade. The materials you purchased for our classroom will touch each child in my classroom. The activities the children complete with the materials can be altered to meet their individual needs and this is so vital to the success of my classroom. I need to teach the children to work independently for two reasons. First I need to teach in small groups and independent centers allow me to work with a few, but keep the rest of the class occupied and second these children must learn independence if they are to be successful back in the general education classroom.

Thank you so much for your purchase. The children are learning, improving their self-esteem and confidence and having a great time doing it.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Boyce

This project will help them master the sight words they need to build their fluency and become skilled readers. Thank you so much for your gift. I can't wait to share it with the children”

  • The Backpack Solution

    Funded Aug 14, 2007

I am so excited that my backpack solution project has been funded. This has been an idea that my teaching assistant and I have worked to develop and I know that it is going to be a wonderful opportunity to begin teaching the children in my classroom responsibility and self-control. Thank you so much for your kindness and I can't wait to send the pictures and notes from the children. They are going to be so excited when they receive their backpacks.

  • My Life in Pictures

    Funded Apr 2, 2006

Thank you so much for providing this opportunity. This is going to be a wonderful way for my children to improve their writing. The boys will be so much more excited about writing when they are writing about their own lives. It will also be a great keepsake for them. The book they create with their pictures and their stories will be a memory from this time in their lives. I am so excited to get this project started. I've shared the news with my principal and fellow special education teachers and we are all excited to begin. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    New Prospect Elementar”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Boyce

I am a special education teacher at a small middle school in upstate South Carolina. I have approximately 40 sixth and seventh grade students on my caseload. Our middle school implements an inclusion model to serve our students. The inclusion model is a team teaching model. The special education teacher and the general education teacher work together to teach the subject to the students. I also teach a study skills class to the 8th grade students who struggle with executive functioning skills. It is challenging to meet the needs of so many diverse students, but it is a great environment for the students to learn in and allows children who struggle but don't qualify for special education services to benefit from the teaching strategies I bring to the classroom.
