DISTANCE LEARNING ENABLES EDUCATION TO SURVIVE
Funded Aug 12, 2020Thanks to your generous donation, the Microsoft Surface has enabled me to power through the most difficult times during the pandemic by enabling me to not only have a reliable device, but also to continue teaching in this new modality , enabling me to have the ability to write (using the touchscreen feature with stylus) on the virtual whiteboard and allowing me to annotate just as I would if I were back in the classroom. I would say this was the most exciting feature for my students. As Math is largely a visual subject, this feature enabled my kids to view each step of problem solving just as in the classroom setting.
This laptop also has helped me to discover additional class resources I would not have normally accessed in a physical setting. For instance, I was able to discover a plethora of educational videos and programs that I could use with my kids. From a hardware standpoint, the graphics and high resolution video and audio enabled me to maintain connectivity throughout the school day. Additionally, since we developed many of our own teaching strategies during virtual instruction, students also had the ability to submit assignments remotely and allowed me to monitor my students, to
test them for understanding and enhance their knowledge through teaching in a virtual setting.
When we returned to the classroom at school, back in October, the laptop has continued to be of great help. I have been able to keep in touch with parents,
students and coworkers .
Additionally , an unexpected benefit has been the ability to transition easily from virtual to physical and vice versa. When school was cancelled due to Tropical Storm Eta, I was able to easily transition into virtual class and when we have had to quarantine, I've been able to flawlessly pívot to virtual learning. Providing this interactive experience has allowed my students to maintain the best sense of normalcy possible.
Lastly, we used the laptop's software to upload and edit a Christmas music video I did with my students of 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer'.
Once again, I am boundlessly grateful to my donor for his/her contribution , which has made such a big impact in both my and my students' lives. My students and I send our heartfelt thanks for this gift.”

Making Master Mathematicians
Funded Jan 24, 2014WOW!, is exactly what my students said the very first time I showed them the Surface Pro 2 we got, thanks to DonorsChoose.org. They were truly excited because I had already told them we had asked for a Surface laptop through your organization. They had been asking whether the Surface had arrived, for a long time, and were excitedly awaiting its arrival in anticipation of what it would do for our class. We needed the laptop in order to connect it to our projector so that we could see the Math book, which is online, projected on the board.
As soon as we turned it on the very first time, we realized how much better Math instruction flowed now, since we were able to see the math page projected onto the white board. We had always struggled with the problem of not being able to project the textbook pages onto the classroom's whiteboards in order to teach the math lessons effectively. However, we are now able to see the actual lesson pages from the book, magnified on the board and my students can now practice the process needed to solve the mathematical computations directly on the board, on top of the projected page. The Surface has also made it possible for them to interact with the material by coming to the board and solving the problems in front of their other classmates.
Being able to see the page projected, thanks to our Surface, as well as magnified keeps them engaged and focused, and is making it possible for us to save time by not having to wait for the word problems to be written on the board. Our ESOL and ESE students are now better able to comprehend the lessons as well because they can now see the visuals to go along with the explanations and the problems. Students can finally follow along as we solve the math problems together as a class. Additionally, it has allowed me to show instructional videos and clips related to Math, thus infusing technology and making Math learning more fun. A big THANK YOU!!! to all our donors for making all this possible.”
