I teach in an underfunded, urban school outside of Washington D.C. where most of the students walk to school. It's a great community school and we get to meet many of the parents after school during pick-up. All of my 1st graders are very excited about school and love to read. Since the Common Core has a focus on writing as well, my students are beginning to get used to writing being a part of every day. At this age, they don't moan when they are asked to write an answer.
