Statistics: Making It Visual!
Funded Jul 19, 2023As I sit here thinking how close we are getting to the beginning of the school year and worrying that my students will have the supplies they need, the donor's choose email popped up and said FUNDED! I am so happy! The end of the summer brings so much planning and excitement for starting the year with a group of brand new students who are ready to learn. This is one huge relief to have these supplies, so that I can concentrate on quality instruction and providing for a wonderful learning experience!”

Funded Jul 28, 2018Thank you so much for helping to fund my project. My students are thrilled that our classroom will be equipped with a brand new projector and document camera! I will be able to quickly display solutions to free response questions and my students will be able to proudly display their own! This opens new doors to discussion and collaboration. This contributes so much to an atmosphere of sharing interesting math solutions and taking abstract understanding to the next level. I cannot imagine teaching class without the projector and camera. I can do a quick demonstration for collecting data and it is visible to all just by clicking a button. I can project a video from a website or do a Kahoot (a game type instructional software program) to really get the students involved in my lesson.
I am also excited to be able be able to show my students relevant websites, apps, and applets to engage them in my lessons. I can use applets that have been written by university professors and expert statisticians to explore the relationships in data. Instead of just telling them information, they can explore it and discover new theorems and concepts. Doing it in a visual way, makes the information so much more memorable. I know that their scores on the AP test in May will reflect this retained knowledge.
Again, thank you so much for making my class a better place to learn and giving me the tools to be a more effective teacher! Each year, I take professional development course so that I can hone my teaching skills. I also teach many summer institutes and workshops for other statistics teachers. With the help of donors like you, the difference this equipment makes goes far beyond my individual classroom. Creating a engaging classroom for my own students, translates in better ways to show developing teachers how to transform their teaching styles, too.”

Funded Oct 9, 2015You can only imagine the joy I felt when you funded this project! When the email arrived in my inbox, I promptly emailed the math department at Bellaire High School to tell them that we were one step closer to having one of the most important resources for a teacher when adopting a new textbook: a TEACHER'S EDITION! This marks the first year in the implementation of online textbooks in our school district. However, we did not have a single physical copy of either a student textbook or the teacher's edition of the textbook. Digital access has many wonderful features to make learning enriching and engaging, but a basic foundation of a hard, physical, copy of the textbook is absolutely necessary. In a perfect world, Wifi works continuously, websites don't crash, and networks never go down. Chevron, you have provided me and other teachers in my school with this foundation!
The "planning" part of lesson design is often overlooked in its importance in the instructional cycle. Teachers peruse a host of resources in order to design a lesson that ignites the interest of the children in their classroom. Having a teacher's edition of our textbook provides a starting point, especially to new teachers, for the pacing, activities, and assessments that students need to grow in their understanding of new math concepts. The teacher's editions that Chevron has provided for us will work when we have no WIFI or when the textbook website is down. The physical copies will allow teachers to flip pages and make well informed decisions as to how to teach or reteach a concept. Students also will be able to check their answers instantaneously without having to power up their laptops.
Although this is not a fancy project with bells and whistles galore, the funding of this project is so appreciated and needed. Our textbook adoption spans 10 years. These teacher's editions will be checked out by teachers yearly to provide resources for their instructional decisions. Thank you, Chevron, for making this possible. These resources will impact literally hundreds of students each year, and thousands of young minds over the entire span of the next decade.”
