Learning Through Play
Funded Sep 13, 2023Thank you so much for the wonderful games you donated to our classroom. The students have absolutely loved playing them and I've been so grateful to have colorful, sturdy games that I didn't need to create by hand!
With one sometimes reluctant learner, I have seen a huge change in his behavior since the games arrived. As long as I promise him we're going to start class with a game, he practically runs to transition to our small group space. Similarly, it's easy to coax him to clean up as long as I guarantee we can play a quick game with any remaining class time. It's so beautiful to see a student think they are tricking me into giving them free time to play when I know the games we are playing are helping them master important math and literacy content.
Thank you so much for funding my project and giving the classroom a gift we will be able to use for years to come. You have made a meaningful difference in my life and the lives of my scholars.”
With gratitude,

Literature in the Math Classroom
Funded Oct 31, 2018Thank you so much for the generous gift you gave our school by funding our math library. The books have already been enjoyed by my students in a variety of ways. During lessons on odd and even numbers, we read "My Odd Day" and "My Even Day" and students listed as many odd and even numbers as they could. They competed to record the most numbers and then explained how they knew in which category those numbers belonged. It was wonderful to hear the students laughing at the silly scenarios presented in the books and then hear their academic vocabulary being used during the discussion that followed.
When students finish classwork early, they are eager to visit the math library. Our more advanced readers have enjoyed "Math Doesn't Suck" and "The Number Devil." Many of the Spanish-speaking students were excited to pour over the Spanish-language copy of "And Then the Doorbell Rang" (Llaman a la Puerta) and discuss, in Spanish, the math concepts within.
It is so meaningful to see the students bridging their love of reading with their love of math. Thank you for making their joy possible through your generosity.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Apple
