My 5th grade classroom is made up of students who have had bad experiences at other public schools. The schools they have attended in the past had not served them well, so many of them are below grade level. However, they are aware of the challenges they face and they have a strong desire to learn. They have chosen to attend our brand new charter school because we have set high academic and behavior standards. When the adults set the bar high and expect nothing less, students will succeed. I have more boys than girls. They are an active bunch and most are reluctant readers. They love science and history, so I think the non-fiction titles I have requested will interest them. Many of my students go above the expectations I set. For example, I wanted to review the 50 states at the beginning of the year. I assigned each student 2 states. I only asked them to find out 3 pieces of information to present. The next day, elaborate posters came pouring in, along with student-made quizzes!
