  • Our Classroom Wish List

    Funded Aug 4, 2023

Thank you for your amazing donation. My students have loved having these materials that we received. In the morning it has given them and myself a new way to allow them to enter the classroom and to begin their day. In fact, they loved some of the items so much that I have purchased more sets with my own money.

The whiteboards are being used to support students at home and to help our students here in Alaska to be supported with reading skills that are necessary to meet the goals of the Alaska Reads Act. In providing these whiteboards and other added materials it gives them a chance to practice independently and with support from parents and guardians.

The games have allowed them to practice in school skills such as their addition and subtraction with the Bingo game that was ordered, but in a fun way.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Safien

  • Chromebooks for Education

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Thank you so very much for your support with donating the Chromebooks that we have been able to add to the technology in our classroom. These 6 Chromebooks have made a great impact on the learning for my students this school year, and for future students in the coming years. We have been using these computers primarily for our reading program called Lexia. Lexia Core 5 is a proven piece of technology that can help to improve students reading abilities greatly. Due to having the added 6 Chromebooks it has enabled to give each of my students the ability to regularly work on these skills on a daily basis versus having to do a rotational schedule. My students have greatly enjoyed using this resource. I plan on furthering the use of these Chromebooks next school year with helping my students with extra math practice as well, which will greatly increase my students abilities in both math and reading.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Safien

  • Crochet Quilts for Seniors

    Funded Oct 30, 2013

Since the resources arrived later than expected our project will not be completely done by April 5, 2014. The materials arrived in pieces spread farther apart in time than I expected, so it was hard for them to imagine the type of project that we are trying to complete. Once we fully received the materials though the interest they are showing has greatly increased.

So far though the students are having a good time trying to learn how to crochet. Since some of my students have never used a crochet hook or been around someone who knows how to do this type of work it has been harder than I expected to teach them the basics in a short amount of time. However, they are each wanting to try and complete this project, and have been working hard to try to master this art form.

Furthermore, my students have been carrying around the idea of my original intention of this project of showing kindness towards others and strive really hard to live this virtue. The idea of being kind towards others have helped them in other endeavors such as raising $300.00 towards a recent school fundraiser "Pennies for Patients." This amount was the highest amount raised by one single class in our school and contributed towards a school total, well over $1,300.00. The fundraiser is to help raise money towards the treatment and research of children who suffer from leukemia or other blood-related cancers.

It really makes me grateful to receive these materials because my students are continuing towards creating an everlasting project, not just physically but emotionally in their minds of what it truly means to show kindness towards other people.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Safien

I have a very diverse group of students, my school is a Title I school and we receive federal funding due to the low socioeconomic status of our school population. A large majority of my students are on free or reduce lunch programs and many come from broken homes. The transient rate of our population also remains fairly high as we are considered an urban school in the heart of the downtown area of the town.
