I am a second and third grade teacher for deaf and hard of hearing kids at a new charter school for kindergarten through 5th grade. We are a state-wide program, attracting deaf and hard of hearing students from many districts to our school so that they can receive all of their education in sign language and interact with adults and peers who can directly communicate with them. One of the largest struggles I have is motivating and teaching deaf and hard of hearing students how to read and write. Most research shows that deaf and hard of hearing students graduate with a third grade reading level. Our goal is to change this through showing students how ASL relates to English!
