I am the proud teacher of the District 75 Program of the New York City Department of Education. We are part of a larger district that serves students who are on the autism spectrum, have significant cognitive delays, are severely emotionally challenged, sensory impaired and/or multiply disabled. Our school services students on the autism spectrum from grades K-12. My students are in a self-contained classroom, which means that there is a small student to staff ratio, and that students are grouped by similarity of educational needs. Most students also receive related services such as Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy within the classroom. All of my students receive free lunches, and live in high poverty areas. Resources and parental involvement in our classroom are scarce. Despite these circumstances, everyday with these young minds, although challenging, is truly remarkable.
