  • Building Reading Skills in 1st Grade

    Funded Jul 31, 2017

I would like to thank you again for your generous donation of the read aloud books with CD and the word family cards.

The kids have enjoyed being able to listen and follow along with the stories, especially since they are non fiction stories. It has increased their interest in non fiction reading. Some are now developing the skill of tracking better when someone else is reading. Others are now able to read along with the story. While others are now reading the story without the CD read along.

Reading in a first grade classroom can take many forms, especially when working with ELL students. In my class you will see some developing the skills of reading to themselves. Some are reading along with a buddy, while others maybe reading with myself or my assistant.

The word family cards have been a help in helping my students better come up with rhyming words and word building. With making the words they are also able to build vocabulary skills as we are working on consonant blends.

My students thank you for helping them to develop skills that help them become better readers.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Becky Keith

  • Building Literacy Through Stations

    Funded Jan 6, 2017

Thank you for you contribution to my project. The new items you helped provide, I have been able to add more fun and independence to the stations. Many times a week I have students come to me to show me their sentence they wrote with an illustration. Seeing the joys on their faces when we get out the sight word step game is great. They are becoming more independent and learning their sight words!

When they first saw the materials they were hollering and jumping up and down. There was few callouts like "whoooo whoooo" and "yeah baby." They immediately wanted to open them. So we gathered on the carpet and opened each one so they could see it all. They were so attentive when discussing how we will use each one. They were so excited.

With the sight word steps we are adding even more words and they love it. In the writing station they make one sentence in the box and they are beginning to build and talk more about that one sentence. With all the word building games the students are getting better and segmenting and blending words. They are also getting more independent at spelling simple 3 letter words. We are beginning to start building more complex 4-5 letter words now. With these materials I am able to challenge them more and I love it!

Thank you again, your generosity is appreciated.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Becky Keith

  • Listening and Reading Station

    Funded Sep 9, 2016

    Dear Donors,

I would like to thank you for your generous donations so that I was able to get a new big book reading cart and a wireless headphone listening station for my class. With the big book cart we now have a place to hold our big books without propping them up. The students are able to read the big books at the reading station without laying the books on the floor. This has increased their excitement for the reading station that they didn't have before. In the listening station they are able to enjoy their favorite books being read to them without getting tangled in the cords when turning the pages in the books.

Reading in kindergarten is a lot of books with repetitive/predictable texts and reading sight word reader books. The text and illustrations enable children to anticipate words, phrases or events. Predictable books help with the students with developing reading skills because they are engaging and interesting to students. The repetitive texts can help children follow story lines and be able to successfully sequence a story. Repetitive and predictable books have wonderful story patterns that help the reader deliver the story with fluency and rhythm. With the big book cart the kids are able to enjoy them even more.

With the listening station the students are able to hearing a book read on CD. This helps them see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It provides a model of fluent reading. The audio books also give them an important introduction to listening — a skill that she must master in order to learn to read. With this station I am now able to bring more book options for the students to listen to by utilizing the public library which I hope excites them so their parents will take them to the library to check out books as well.

I cannot express enough what an impact this donation has made. For certain this has instilled a new love for reading in my students. Thank you again.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Becky Keith

  • Learning Reading And Math Through Technology

    Funded Mar 1, 2016

Thank you for your generous donation so that I could purchase 2 iPads with cases and a Samsung Chrome book for my Prek kids. They are enjoying them so much. They are able to interact with the apps and games independently which helps them build some self confidence. I am able to better prepare my little ones for testing by letting them practice the skills such as letter idenfication, sound knowledge and rhyming. WIth math skills they are building knowledge of shapes and measurements. Without this added technology my students my students have more hands on opportunities for learning skills needed for kindergarten.”

  • Mrs. Keith's Learning and Literacy Stations

    Funded Dec 28, 2015

My students are using the resources in workstations, small groups, and whole group. Using the alphabet bean bag set, one of the students recalled a letter that he has been struggling with learning. With the phone set the kids are able to interact and play "teacher" where they are able to say the sounds of letters so their friends can repeat it. Another student has increased her knowledge of letter sounds by using the phone.

The story telling set is a favorite in my class. Using the story telling pieces the students have increased their story telling skills and comprehension. My using the pieces one little girl has started using the big books and retelling the stories.

When they first saw the materials they all started screaming and hollering with excitement. They immediately wanted to open and play with everything at one time. It was like Christmas morning for them.

The students next step is to start using the bean bags to produce words that begin with the letter they choose. Currently they are identifying the letters that either they choose themselves or that I call out.

Your kindness and generosity can not be repaid. Thank you again for your donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Becky Keith

Most of my students come from a Spanish speaking home. These ELL students are weak in vocabulary, alphabet knowledge, and math skills as they relate to the English language. Daily, we work on building vocabulary, alphabet knowledge, story comprehension, and math skills.
