My students attend an urban, inner city high school with an ethnically and culturally diverse population. These students have been hand-picked for a program targeting first-generation college students. I teach the Honors Ninth-grade English class. My students are vibrant, thoughtful, energetic, insightful, and interested in the world around them. Our school does not have funding for new books; in fact, we're currently under scrutiny for the number of photocopies we make, in spite of the fact that we have no books to give our students. We really need books to put in the hands of the kids. There's no way we can cover an entire novel during class time alone, so my students need to be able to take their own book home to read independently.
