  • Wanted: Various Perspectives!

    Funded Aug 18, 2022

Thank you for helping to provide my students with diverse literature! These books have paired wonderfully with required texts to provide my students jumping off points for deeper conversations. We have been able to explore topics of equity and diversity in a safe and respectful way.

I've been using the texts as part of my "first chapter Friday" project where I read only the first chapter aloud to students. This has helped create an interest in the books and students have taken it upon themselves to create lists to ensure everyone gets a chance to read the books. 🤣

Thank you again! We are incredibly grateful!”

    With gratitude,

  • A Cozy Classroom Is Best For Learning

    Funded Oct 3, 2019

Before your donation, our classroom was sparsely decorated with the bare minimum materials needed for learning. My second graders had to lift themselves up to get a drink of water. When I said, "Go to the carpet, please," students didn't really know where to go. With your help, our classroom is now cozy and comfortable. We received two differently colored rugs, so now students know exactly where to go for our learning activities. Students have a step stool to help them get drinks of water. We have lamps and plants in our classroom! This has helped students choose more comfortable places to work and bring the outside environment inside. Thank you for helping make our classroom look and feel like a home.

Students were so excited when our boxes arrived! We had a great time unboxing and deciding where to place our new treasures. Since we received our items towards the beginning of the year, this experience served as a bonding experience for us. Thank you!

When we return to school next week, students will be writing narratives and sharing them with older students.

Thank you again for helping to make our classroom a place where we all want to be.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Herinckx

Students learn best in a classroom that is warm, inviting, and "home-like." Having rugs, lamps, and plants would help contribute to setting this tone in our classroom. The rugs will be used to define two learning spaces for my second graders: one for literacy and one for math. When students are able to move to a specific place in the classroom where instruction happens, it helps imprint the learning on students' brains. Having soft lighting in my classroom would allow us to not rely on the harsh fluorescent lighting, helping to keep the environment calm. Using plant stands would allow us to have more variety with where plants are placed in the classroom, again, providing a homey feeling.
