Funded Aug 14, 2018Thank you so much for supporting my project to bring John Lewis's graphic memoir, March, to my students. The book provided an accessible and engaging way for my students at all reading levels to interact with the individuals, events, speeches, and ideas of the civil rights movement. Even after we were done reading book 3 as a class (the only one we read together), I had students asking me to borrow copies of books 1 and 2, and students requesting to borrow copies of book 3 to share with their parents and siblings.
In my class, we used March as part of a semester-long inquiry into the history of voting rights in the United States. Many students pointed to this as the highlight of the semester for them, and marveled at the hurdles African Americans faced so recently in the fight for true democracy in our country. We read sections of the book aloud as a whole class, students read other sections in pairs, and students also took the book home to read. After completing the book, students engaged in small seminar discussions of major themes, quotes, and issues that the book raised. I believe that reading this text truly did bring civil rights to life for my students.
Reading about the fight for the Voting Rights Act was so inspiring to my students that many of them have chosen to write their semester paper about the Voting Rights Act, and are using the moments and individuals profiled in the book as a jumping off point for further research. None of this would have been possible without your support, so I and my students truly thank you.”
With gratitude,
