  • Affirming Books for a Culturally Diverse Library!

    Thank you all so much for your contributions to my classroom this year! The affirming books and mindfulness materials you've helped me to provide have already stimulated my students' growth in tangible ways! While 3rd graders have been creating choreography based on the storylines of the books they have read, students as young as Kindergarten have created art in the culturally representative coloring books and reflected on their feelings using the Emotional Check-In white boards.

    The looks on my students' faces when they stepped into the newly stocked dance studio this year were unforgettable. I look forward to the many "aha" moments that will come as we continue to read these books and utilize these mindfulness materials all year long! All of this is possible because of your generosity!   • Writing, Sketching, and Drawing Our Dreams in the Dance Studio!

    Thank you all so much for your contributions to my classroom this year! The writing materials you've helped me to provide have already stimulated my students' growth in tangible ways! While Fourth and Fifth graders have been journaling and note-taking with their paper and pencils, 3rd graders have been planning and designing dances with their white boards and markers.

    The looks on my students' faces when they stepped into the newly stocked dance studio this year were unforgettable. In previous years, groups of students would have to share materials or borrow from other classrooms, now each child has their own materials and can fully focus on their own work without interruption.   • Mirrors for Our Classroom Dance Studio!

    It has been my honor and privilege to teach with the materials you've generously bestowed upon my classroom. When I first installed the mirrors and tried covering them up, my students knew right away that something was up! Once I finally revealed them, their initial fascination with the simple ability to see their own reflections turned into fixation on how to use the mirrors to improve their dancing. We have used the mirrors to clean group choreography, to practice proper form for different dance techniques, and to help partners or small groups create their own movement phrases. I have even launched an after-school enrichment program - New Bridges Dance Crew - in which dancers use the mirrors to self-correct and take ownership over their dance education!

    My school's Spring Arts Festival is coming up in May and grades K through 5 will be preparing in my studio to perform. The mirrors will be extremely helpful in my upcoming unit about connecting with the audience - as the mirrors will represent the audience! Students will make eye contact with their reflections and practice communicating the emotions and messages of their dance through their movement and facial expressions. These skills are essential to developing expressive and well-rounded performers, and YOU all have all allowed my students the chance to achieve those goals. On behalf of all my dancers and school community, we cannot thank you all enough!”

Students from kindergarten through 5th grades learn dance technique, history, choreography, and composition in my classroom studio. My goal is to instill a life-long love for dance in my students by offering them tools to become successful students, performers, choreographers, and even teachers if they so choose! Many of my students may not have the opportunity to learn in a professional dance studio outside of school, in which mirrors are a valuable tool for learning proper body form, self-correction, and spatial awareness. With mirrors in my classroom, I can teach my students more about individual body awareness and alignment in technique, as well as strategies for staging and cleaning group choreography when preparing for performances. My students can also use mirrors when engaging in partner or small group work, which will increase their creativity, independence, and confidence in their abilities. Installing mirrors in my classroom will both enrich my students' elementary dance education and help prepare them for successful careers in the dance world!
