Philly Students: Experiential Learning in American Southwest
Funded Dec 27, 2015Our trip is right around the corner and we could not be more excited. The packing list and itinerary are keeping us busy ... looking at all the places we will learn about! As students in the Philly schools, an opportunity like this is incredibly unique. We could not be more grateful for your support. Many of us will be on a plane for the first time and none of us has ever been out west. The amount of new experiences will be intense.
We will use our time during this learning expedition to think about our senior Capstone projects which kick off in the fall. Also, we feel like this experience will help us think about our plans after graduation. Meeting students from Arizona is also something we think will really help us as we grow and learn about life outside the city.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Gates Foundation & Think It Up Supporters and 30 other donors.Supplies To Fuel Learning
Funded Jun 18, 2015Thank you so much for supporting my classroom. As you may remember, our high school classrooms had plenty of materials. These days, in the public school I work in, that is not the case. These materials have been critical this year to helping my students engage in learning Geometry. Students have more fun and learn more when they use their hands to learn and have the colorful materials to create beautiful work. They take pride in not only how awesome their work looks but in the accuracy and rigor of the work they produce.
Thank you again. Your donation means a lot to us.”

Calculating the Size of the World
Funded Aug 22, 2015Thank you everyone for your support. My students really appreciate your generosity. These calculators and batteries helped us start the year off right. I was able to give more students hands-on experiences and they were able to use these tools wisely as they worked hard and learned a lot. More students were able to use the calculators on important state and national tests as well as during class time. Please continue to support students across this country as there are many classrooms in need and many teachers with lots of brilliant ideas.”

Help Measure Our World; Visualizing the Future Together
Funded Sep 14, 2014Thank you to everyone for supporting this project. My students just completed a mural project and used many of these supplies to create beautiful works of art. They were able to connect their new math skills with art and really enjoyed the chance to show their creativity. We've also been able to use the magnetic dry-erase graph paper in class to more easily show varied rates of change. The dry erase markers have also helped because the wide array of colors allows us to graph multiple lines on one graph while not being confusing. Overall, each of these supplies has been a benefit to our classroom learning experience. I hope you'll continue to support classrooms across the US, especially during the upcoming giving season.”

Flying High for Experiential Education & the Great Outdoors
Funded Jan 7, 2013Thank you to everyone for supporting our adventure. We just got back and everyone is glowing from the experience. The students visited the Grand Canyon and were amazed by its size. They explored a rare seasonal waterfall outside of Flagstaff and boated down the San Juan River. Many of them explored the campus of Northern Arizona University and can now imagine going West for college. They made lifelong friends with the Flagstaff students that we rafted with and saw their first shooting stars.
Thanks again. Please continue to support experiential education for students across the States.”

Supplying the Hands: Schooling the Minds
Funded May 17, 2012Thank you all for your support. The students recently used most of the supplies to help them create beautiful projects for Geometry. Many of them created colorful posters while others tied together their work to create books. Their projects are now being displayed on the bulletin boards in the hallway for all to see and people will be enjoying their work for the next month. My Algebra students will be using the supplies to beautify their blueprints for this quarter as well. Please continue to support classrooms across the country because there are still many students in need.”

Share the Bus, Share the Learning
Funded Mar 16, 2012Thank for your support of our class field trip to Washington D.C. Both groups benefited greatly from the experience.
The African American Lit students got to make personal connections with the stories of Holocaust survivors and engage in a critical comparison of oppressed peoples. During the tour, Mr. K was particular about answering all of their questions and providing additional information, to the point where he was actually complimented by the museum staff!
The Journalism students spent close to four hours soaking up all of the different exhibits and programs at the Newseum. A particular favorite was the large gallery of printed newspapers, starting in the sixteenth century and up until the present day. The group also participated in a class on Media Ethics, where they were given several different real-life case studies and asked to consider what journalistic decision they would have made (for the record, they often had higher moral standards than people in the real situation did.) This informed their viewing of Pulitzer-prize winning photographs, which was a special gallery exhibit at the Newseum this season.
The experiences informed both classes â students had a lot to talk about in the days and weeks returning from the excursion. It's your support that makes this kind of enrichment possible. Thank you again.”

River Rafting: Experiential Education Completes a Classroom
Funded Dec 6, 2011This trip was fantastic. The kids enjoyed themselves and learned an immense amount. They explored the San Juan River for 4 days, learning about rocks, nature, themselves and each other. They challenged themselves to paddle rafts against the wind and to hike in the high elevation desert. They hiked down in to the Grand Canyon and saw a variety of animals and plants. They are exhausted but fulfilled. Many of them are looking forward to visiting the Southwest again later in life and perhaps participating in another river trip on their own.
Please continue to support experiential education as it is a crucial piece of the education puzzle.

Advancing our Statistics: Preparation for the Future
Funded Mar 20, 2011Thank you so much for supporting my students. The students are hard at work using these books to review for the AP Statistics exam which is coming up shortly. It is great to see them collaborating and leading their own review. These books make this a lot easier and help me differentiate my lessons to support all of the students in the class. Thanks again for your enormous amount of support for my classroom.
Please continue to support students across the Nation. All children need our support.”
